COMB AND BARRETT,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, .1913.
Application filed August 30, 1912. Serial No. 717,893.
To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, JOHN ALFRED BUR- LANDO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Comb and Barrette, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.
T is invention relates generallyto articles for womens wear, and is particularly directed to a new and improved comb and barrette.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a cooperating comb and barrette, the barrette being adapted to be held on the comb after the comb has been positioned on thehead.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple structure comprising a cotiperating comb and barrette, the use of which prevents loss of the barrette or the comb smce the parts are held in engagement with each other and also with the persons'hair.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of the combined structure; Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe bar- "rette; Fig. 3 is a partial view of the comb having the keyhole slot formed in each of the end teeth; Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the inter-engagement between the comb and the barrette; while Fig. 5 is a partial view of the rear of the barret-t-e, showing the lug adapted to enter the said keyhole slot.
The comb 1 is of conventional form, in that it comprises a number of teeth 2 and a top portion 3 from which the teeth extend, the material of which the comb is made being of no consequence, and the size and shape being capable of variation.
The end teeth 2 of the comb are relatively longer than the intermediate teeth and adjacent their lower ends are provided with keyhole slots 4, as shown particularly in Fig. 3; the particular size and form of these slots, as Well as the relative location on the said end teeth, may, of course. be changed.
. The barrette 5, as shown, comprises a hollow rectangular structure, such particular v -form of barrette, however' being merely shown to illustrate the inventive idea, since it is apparent that the barrette need not be hollow and need not be rectangular, but may follow any of the conventional styles or patterns, provided with suitable ornamentation. At any event, opposite ends of the barrette are provided with lugs 6, which lugs arel provided with headed ins 7, adapted to be positioned in the said eyhole slots, the parts being fixed by giving a slight downward movement of the barrette rclatively to the comb in order to bring the head of the pin into engagement with the side of the end teeth 2.
The article is positioned in use in the following manner: The comb is placed in position in the hair where desired, and the barrette is then engaged with the comb by bringing about the cooperation between the keyhole slots and pins 7 in such relation the barrette is held against displacement relatively to the comb and the comb and barrette together are prevented from loss by being enga ed in the hair. The relative disposition o the comb and barrette is angular to conform to the rotundity of the wearers head.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is A structure of the class described, comprising a comb havin the ends at the lower portions thereof provided with slots, and a barrette, opposite ends of the barrette being provided with lugs, the lugs being provided with headed pins, the said pins engaging in the said slots, whereby the comb and barrette are held together.
In'testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
. JOH ALFRED BURLANDO.
