To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS G. BREITEN J and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tie- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tie fasteners and relates particularly to fasteners for hair ties or the like. I

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for this purpose, which shall be attractive in appearance and effective for its designed use. To this end a tie fastener binding device of my invention comprises the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing in which my invention is fully illustrated,

Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved tie fastener, showing the tie, in full lines, applied for tying a tuft of hair and showing the same loose, in dotted lines.

Figs. 2 and 3 are side views thereof from the positions 2-2 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1, the cord being omitted.

My improved tie fastener consists of plates or members 1 and 2, which are of substantially the same size and shape'in plan view and of which the member 1 is substantially flat and the member 2 has turnedreferred to as the clipimember. erably positioned somewhat to one side of the transverse center line of the fastener. For purposes of convenient reference, the side of the fastener toward which said rivets are offset will be called the rear side thereof and the opposite side of said fastener, the front side.

Formed in the turned down front and rear edges, respectively, of the member 2 are pairs of notches 4, 4 and 5, 5, which, when the plates 1 and 2 are riveted together, form holes for the tie. Said holes are arranged symmetrically with reference to the rivets 3, and the space between each pair of said holes is, preferably, slightly less than the space between said rivets.

In the preferable construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, the members 1 and 2 are substantially round in plan view, but the shape thereof admits of a wide range of variation without departing frommy invention.

For reasons presently apparent, the top sides of the holes 4, 4 at the outer ends thereof preferably extend at acute angles to the surface of the plate or member 1, see particularly Fig. 2.

In use, the tie, indicated at 6, is inserted through the rear holes 5, 5, between the rivets 3 and with its free ends extending through the holes 4, 4, as shown in Fig. l, in which the lace is shown disengaged and loosened, in dotted lines, and as applied in use for binding or tying up a tuft of hair, designated 7 in full lines.

The manner of using my improved tie fastener is as follows: The tie 6 being disengaged and loosened, the tuft or look of hair 7 is inserted through the loop thereof and the free ends of said tie separated and drawn tight, which will tighten the loop of said tie around the tuft of hair, and, owing to the acute angle formed between the outer ends of the notches4, 4 and the surface of the member 1. will exert a wedging action thereon, which will force said members apart and draw the ends of said tie beneath the turned down edges of said clip member 2 at the outer sides of the holes 4, 4, the grip of said plates on said tie,together with the abrupt turns of said tie around the rivets 3 operating to securely fasten said lace tightly around the tuft of hair'7 or other object.

To release the tie, it is merely necessary to draw the same from between the members 1 and 2, when said tie may be easily loosened.

Owing to its lightness, the ease with which it can be shaped by stamping, its attractive appearance and cheapness, I prefer to make the plates 1 and 2 from thin sheet celluloid,

but my invention contemplates making said plates of any other desired or suitable material.

lVhile I prefer to use two rivets for connecting the members 1 and 2 of the tie fastener, I do not desire to limit myself to this construction, as my invention contemplates other means for connecting said mem bers land 2. For example, a single rivet may be used for connecting said members instead of the two rivets shown in Figs. 1 to 4. This modification is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, in which the members of the fastener are designated 1 and 2', re spectively, 3 the single rivet which connects said members 1 and 2. As shown, said tie fastener is provided with tie openings sub-.

' they are separated and drawn beneath the turned down edges of the clip member 2 in the same manner as in the preferable form of the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4.

As a further modification of my improved fastener, I contemplate attaching or anchoring one end of the tie to the tie fastener, manipulation of the tie being effected by means ofthe single loose end thereof.

This modification is illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, in which 1 and 2 designate the members of the fastener, 3 the rivets for connecting same and 6 the tie. One end of said tie (3 is adapted to be anchored or attached to the fastener, as by. means of a knot or button 8 on the end thereof, the end of said tie on which said knot is formed or the button attached being drawn beneath the edge of the clip member 2 with said knot or button in contact with the sideof the fastener, so that an abrupt turn will be imparted to the attached endof said tie about the adjacent rivet 3 The loose end of the tie is inserted through the tie'holes at the back and front of the tie fastener between the rivets 3 and is adapted to be fastened by drawing the .same laterally beneath the turned down edge of the clip member 2 in substantially the same manner as shown in Fig. 1.

This modi fication. is illustrated in 'Fig. 7 of the drawing, in which 1 and 2 designate the members of the fastener, 3 the rivets connecting same and 5 and 5 the tie holes at the rear side of the fastener, said tie holes being formed in the lower member 1 of the fastoner.

As still a further. modification of my im proved tie fastener,instead of separate holes 4:, 4 at the front side of the fastener, I contemplate using but a single hole, indicated at 4 the width of which is substantially equal to the distance between the outer'ends of the holes 4:, ,4, Fig. 2. This modification is shown in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, in which 4: designates the single tie opening at the front side of said fastener. Said opening will cut off and flatten one side of said member 2 and the side of the plate or member 1 preferably will be similarly flattened, as shown at 4*, F ig. 7.

With this modification, the lace, not shown, will be inserted through the: rear holes 5 5* between the posts 3 and through the single tie hole i at the front side of the fastener, substantially in the same manner as in Fig. 1, and will betightened and secured in the same manner.

I claim: 1

1. The combination of a grip device, comprising a cupped member, a flat member and connecting means by which they are secured together, with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface of the flat member, but yieldingly separable therefrom, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside the grip device, with its two end portions entering said device through separate apertures therein and adapted to emerge in opposite directions respectively, between the edge of the cupped member and the face of the flat member, to be gripped thereby.

2. The combination of a grip device, comprising two members, one of which is of cupped form disposed with the edge of its flange opposite to the other member, together with connecting means by which said parts are secured together in such position,

3. The combination of a grip device, comprising a cupped member, a flat member and connecting means by which theyv are secured together with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface ofthe flat member,

but yieldingly separable therefrom, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside the grip device, with its two end portions ent ring such device through separate apertures therein, and arranged to emerge in opposite directions between the edge of the cupped member and the opposing portion of the flat member to be gripped thereby, one of said members having a notch in its edge, into which one end portion of the tie may be slid for releasing the grip of the device upon it.

The combination of a grip device, comprising a cupped member, a flat member and connecting means by which they are secured together, with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface of the flat member, but yieldingly separable therefrom, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside the grip device, with its two end portions entering said device through separate apertures therein and adapted to emerge in opposite directions respectively, between the edge of the cupped member and the face of the flat member, to be gripped thereby, the said cupped member having a notch in its flange substantially as large as the crosssection of the tie to accommodate one end portion of said tie for releasing the grip of the device upon it.

5. The combination of a grip device, comprising a cupped member, a flat member and connecting means by which they are secured together, with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface of the fiat member, but yieldingly separable therefrom, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside the grip device, with its two end portions entering said device through separate apertures therein, and each adapted to bend abruptly about a portion of the said connecting means and to emerge from the device between the edge of the cupped member and the face of the flat member to be gripped thereby.

6. The combination ofa grip device comprising two parts of elastic sheet material, one of said parts being of cupped form and the other part a normally flat disk, together with a rivet connecting said parts with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface of the disk, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside of said device with its two end portions entering the device through separate apertures therein, and each bending Copies of this patent may be obtained for abruptly about the rivet, and extending therefrom in opposite directions respectively, to emerge between the edge of the cupped member and the face of the disk and be gripped thereby.

7. lhe combination of a grip device, comprising two parts of elastic sheet material, one of said parts being of cupped form and the other a normally flat disk, together with two rivets disposed well within the periphery of said parts for securing them together with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface of the flat member, but yieldingly separable therefrom, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside the grip device with its two end portions entering said device through separate apertures there in and between the two rivets, said tie portions being adapted to bend abruptly about their respective rivets and emerge in op- )osite directions between the edge of the cupped member and the face of the disk, to be gripped thereby against retraction for enlargement of the loop.

8. The combination of a grip device, comprising two parts of elastic sheet material, one of said parts being of cupped form and the other a normally flat disk, together with two rivets disposed well within the periphery of said parts for securing them together with the flange of the cupped member engaging the surface of the flat member, but yieldingly separable therefrom, and a flexible tie formed in a loop outside the grip device with its two end portions entering said device through separate apertures therein and between the two rivets, said tie portions being adapted to bend abruptly about their respective rivets and emerge in opposite directions between the edge of the cupped member and the face of the disk to be gripped thereby against retraction for enlargement of the loop, one of said members having a peripheral notch dimensioned to accommodate the tie for freely sliding between the two members.
