Description

R. Vv'. BAHRE.
COTTER PIN EXTRACTI-NG TOOL.

RHEUBEN W. BAHRE, OF DUQUOIN, ILLINOIS.`
COTTER-PIN-EXTRACTING TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
Application filed .Tuly 15, 1918. Serial No. 244,981.
' vices of this character as well as to increase their eiiiciency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cotter pin extracting tool which may be manufactured at exceedingly low cost, and which is constructed in such manner as to provide means for straightening the pin prior to the extracting operation.
IVith these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a cotter pin extracting tool constructed in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved tool.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 3 and 4 indicate respectivelyT crossed handle members, the same being pivoted together inwardly from their ends as at 5.
The members 3 and 4 adjacent their point of connection are provided with jaws (S and 7 whose faces abut each other throughout their lengths when the tool is closed.
The free end of the jaw 7 on the member 3 is provided with a table or anvil S, having an aperture 9 therein to receive a bill or wedge -10 at the free end of the jaw 6 on the handle 4.
Then the handle lmembers 3 and 4 are grasped and moved toward each other, the jaw portions 6 and 7 move correspondingly and the wedge or bill l0 moves into the aperture 9 in anvil t8. It will be. observed that the bill l0 is of substantially pyramidal i form so that the said member entering between thel leg portions of a cotter pin will cause the said portions to move apart.
lYhen it is desired to use the tool in applymg a cotter pin, the straight pin is passed through the opening to receive the Same, whereupon the tool is applied to the free end of the leg portions of the pin by placing the anvil 8 directly beneath the same. Closing of the jaws then causes the bill or wedge 10 to move downwardly between the leg portions thereof. Continued inward pressure applied to the handles of the tool causes the wedge to move further downwardly, whereupon the leg members are.l
separated. In removing a cotter pin, the divergent leg portions thereof are grasped between the jaw faces G and 7, and the handle portions are then moved together. This movement causes the jaws to force the legv portions together or in other words straighten the pin. The bill 10 may then be inserted through the eye of the cotter pin to facilitate withdrawal of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
In a device of the character described, the
combination of a pair of crossed handle members pivotally connected together to form jaws immediately in front. of the pivot thereof, reduced extensions projecting beyond the outer ends of the jaws, one of the extensions terminating in an apertured flat anvil and the other terminating in a'n anglilar wedge shaped bill in position vto move through the apertiire of the anvil as the handle members are swung together, said jaws having fiat abutting surfaces spaced inwardly toward-each other at a considerable distance from the surfaces of the extensions. whereby7 articles may be gripped b v said jaws withoutinjuryv to said articles and without interference from said extensions, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
