Appleationflled March' 12, 1925. Serial No. 14,861.
new anduseful'Means for Supporting ux, iliary Ha1rof. which the following is a specification .sufiicientto enablethose skilled 1n the art towln'chthe;inventionappertamsto utilize. the. same.
The object of'my, invention is to provide simple, inexpensive butelfective andconveniently man1pulatab'lf-z.v means for. feminine use whereby.v artificial or amxiliary. hairV strands :may loe applied .to and supported f at the bac-lr of the headlofffthe user` tocompensate for shortness ory insufficiency of naturalf growth,- andf particularly for use in conjunction with bobbed'hair when it is desired to conceal the lower ends thereof.
To this end my invention consists essentially of an elastic resilient straddle band adapted to lit ythe rear portion of the head of the wearer and provided with ear hooks for sustaining,- it in position and also adapted for the attachment of auxiliary strands of hair, all as hereinafter fully set forth,-an incidental feature being the adjustability of the hook ends of the -device whereby it may be made to conform to different cranial dimensions.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate a practical application and embodiment of the essential features of my invention, although I do not wish to restrict myself to the identical construction and configuration of parts herein shown by way of exemplification, since changes in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedients, may be resorted to with like results, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
'With this understanding Fig". l, represents a rear view of the head of a wearer of my straddle band, the latter being shown in position thereon, but without the auxiliary hair strands;
F ig. 2, is a similar View, showing the auxiliary hair strands in position as supported on the straddle band;
Fig. 3, is a detail View of possible hair strands adapted for use in conjunction with my straddle band;
Fig. 4, is a profile View of the head of a wearer, more or less` diagrammatic, illustrating the function ofthe ear hooks the auxiliaryhair strands being omitted;
Fig. 5', is a perspective .view ofa one piece, structureof my straddle band;
Fig. 6', is a detailview of one end'offmy straddle band,illustratingl one method' ofv providing for, the adj ustmenty of 'an ear hook thereon;
Figs. 7 andSS, are detail'views illustrating another method ofi adjustably,'supporting anear hook on, thek medial' portion 'ofthe band.A
I' prefer to make my straddle band B, of',v elastic resilient' materialfof; relatively light' `flexible character, the medial portionb, being. somewhat' wider. than.the side members J,.ZJ, whiclrterminate in ear hooks 7i', L, each adapted to fit over the helix of an ear of the wearer as indicated more particularly in Fig. 4, of the drawings.
The straddle band B, is formed with perforations a, a, or otherwise adapted to the adjustment and support of auxiliary hair strands S, of any suitable or desired character ,-those shown in Figs. 2 and 3 being illustrative only of the function of the device, which is primarily to cover and'conceal short hair at the back of the head with a screen of supplementary hair correspondingin appearance with the natural growth of hair on the' head of the wearer of said straddle band B. Hence, obviously, the braiding or weaving of the auxiliary hair strands S, is subject to variation to suit requirements or preference.
The perforations a, Va., are adapted to facilitate the attachment of the hair strands S, to the back or medial portion b, of the straddle band B, by resort to stitching or the like, although the means of attachment of the auxiliary hair S, to the straddle band B, is not material provided ample support is afforded said screen of hair S The set or normal configuration of the straddle'band B, is curvilinear, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 5, of the drawings, so as to conform in general outline to the rear lportion of the Cranium of the wearer, the side members 7)', Zi', with the medial portion b, constituting, essentially, a straddle clasp which is enhanced in function by the elastic resilient character of the nijaterial used in the formation of said straddle band B, considering it in a unitary sense, so that the band will fit snugly around and against the ends of the natural growth of hair on the head and coniine same to the base of the skull.
In order, however, to insure positive support for the straddle band B, and its screen of auxiliary hair S, I provide the ends of the side members b', b', with the aforesaid ear hooks h, h., by means of which the device may be suspended, as it were, in position on the lower posterior portion of the head of the wearer, as will be understood by reference more particularly to Fig. 4, of the drawings.
Furthermore, to adapt my straddle band to the varying,` requirements of use, as to cranial size and extent of hair ends to be confined thereby, I attach the shanks L, zi, of the ear hooks h, h, to the medial portion b, of the band B, by means which admit of the adjustment of said hooks 71, it, on the side members b', b', of the band. Thus in Fig. 6, inturned lugs h2, h2, on the shank 7L', of the hook h, clasp the side member b, of the band B, so that the hook is slidably supported on said side member L', whereas a similar adjustable attachment may be effected by means of holes a. a. in the overlapping parts as provided for in Figs. 7 and 8, of the drawings.
While my straddle band B, and its screen o hair strands S, may be used for supplementary embellishment of hair coiffure the combination device thus attained is especially useful and effective in covering short hair of the bobbed style when it is desired to camouiiage the bob cut.
that I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As an article of manufacture, a straddle band of the character designated, formed with ear hooks and havingl means to support strands of auxiliary hair, substantially in the manner and lfor the purpos(` set forth.
2. As an article of' manufacture, an elastic resilient straddle band of the character designated, formed with ear hooks and with perforations for the support of strands of auxiliary hair, substantially inthe manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an article ot manufacture a strad dle band of flexible material having wide median portion and narrow ends, and hooks at the ends, said wider portion having perforations for the attachment ot hair.
