:I DAZAR LEWIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TC)` SAMUEL BONAT AND HARRY BONAT,
DOING BUSINESS AS SAMUEL BONAT & BRO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
coiviB.
My invention is an improvementin combs for human hair, which may also be used as a fastener for hair ornaments. The objects of my invention are to provide a comb to secure womens hair' in place, o-r to secure ornaments in their hair or additions of false hair, and is particularly adapted for these purposes when the hair is bobbed or short.
All the members or elements of my in* vention are to be made of some stiff and hard material, such as metal, hard rubber, shell, ivo-ry, bone, celluloid or other similar material, and the manner of making my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a plan view of an indented member or element of my invention; that is, a member supplied on one end or side with teeth which are designed to pass through the hair in a manner similar tothat of an ordinary comb; this member may be a single indented member, similar to a single comb as shown in Fig. l, or in two indented parts similar to two combs secured together side by side as shown in Fig. 4. In Figs. 2 and 1l is shown a plan view of a second member or element of my invention which is superimposed upon the member shown in Fig. l, and is secured to the non-indented end or side of the indented member shown in Fig. l, and this member I designate as the compression member. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the binding or clasp member or element of my invention which is also secured to the non-indented end of the indented member shown in Fig. l; this binder element is a lever-clasp or binder which may be opened and closed by the user; when closed it is self-secured and is designed, when closed, to press together and to secure together the two members shown in Figs. l and 2. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on lines 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the lines 4 4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the lines 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the lines 7 7 of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of my inve-ntionon the lines 4 4 of Fig. 1 with false hair secured thereto. Fig. 9 is ya Side elevation of my invention as shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 10 shows my invention as shown in rigs. 8 and 9, secured to the head` of a wearer. Fig. 9 also shows the members assembled.
Similar `letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The member or element of myv invention shown in Fig. l, I designate as A; the indented end is indicated at l, and 2 indicates the non-indented or back end or side. There may Vbe kas many, or as few, indentations, or teeth, composing this member as is de'- sired or required by the taste or use of the wearer, and the member A, may be flat, or curved to the contour of the head, as may be desired.
The member or element of my invention shown in Figs. 2 and l1, I designate as B, and this element B may be shorter than A and have a plain surface as shown in Fig. 11, or may be indented as shown in Fig. 2, as may be desired by the wearer, but I prefer the form shown in Fig. 2. The under surface of this element, the surface which is next to element A, is preferably covered, in part or lin whole with soft rubber, a fabric, or some similar material, as this increases the binding effect between the elements A and B when these elements are pressed together by the binder C. One end of the member B (the non-indented, or back end when the element is indented) is secured to the non-indented end of the member A by the ears 3 and 4 passing through the slots 5 and 6, as shown in Fig. 9. If the member A is curved, the member B is respond.
The member or element of my invention shown in Fig. 6 I designate as C, and this element I call the binder, clasp or fastener member. The member'C is hinged or secured to the member A by means of the ears 7 and 8, which are pinionly connected to the ears 8 and 4, in the manner shown in Fig. 9. The member C is provided with the right-angled portion 9, which, when the clasp is closed, is in compressing contact with the member B and serves as the compressing member of the lever-clasp C. The portion lO of member C may be perforated, as shown in Fig. 6 and false hair, 12, may be secured in these perforations and held in place on the head by my invention, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
When the member C is unlasped, the
preferably curved to corindented member A may be passed into the hair as an ordinary comb; after being thus applied to the heir, the :member C is brought to the position shown in Figs 8 and 9, which presses together the members A and B and the comb is secured inthe hair and held in place in the hair by the hair which is compressed between the members A and B. The members B 0r C, or both, may be or--gl namented, or themselves may be made of ornamental material, wearer.
claim: y 1. As an article of manufacture, a1 device of the character described, comprising en' indented member having e non-indented end to themen-indented end of which is hinged a lever-bidder member which m'ay be opened and `closedand, when closed, Wedges to a self-secured posi-tion and presses together the indented member and the lever-binder member.- v l .-i 2. As an article of manufacture, a device as desired by' thek of the character described, comprising two indented members, each having non-indented ends, which are hinged' Vtogether at their non-indented ends, and a lever-binder -member hinged to the nonindented ends' of the indented members which leverbinder member, when closed, Wedges to a self-secured position and presses together the indented members and the leverbinder member.
As a'narticle' of 'menufacture, a device of the character described, comprising an indented member' having'- ya no'n-ii'idented end tothe nerr-indented erid of which is hinged a 'lever-binder `member, Which lever-binder member mfay be opened and closed and, When closed, wedges to' a' self-secured position' and. presses together vthe indentedmember and the lever-binder' member, the exposed face' of said leverbinderm'mber being provided With perforations for securing thereto false' heir or ornaments.
