' TO CHESTER iv'rro rrs, or PRINCETON, 'NEWJERSEY. -i
e HAIR-RETAINING .MEANS.
Application filed March is,
is customary-to take a small strand of'hair,
wind it spirallyon a curling rod and secure it thereto by tying with string ornarrow strips of cloth. I
The principal ob ect of invention to provide a device by means of which astrand of .hair may be tightly wound on,,a curling rod and theouter end of the strand put under tension. T- m 7 Another object of my invention, is to provide-a device by means of which the hair may be quicklyand securely held in place on the curling rod -without-the use of strings and without danger of injury to the hair. I
' These objects, and other advantageousends which will be described hereinafter, attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan'view of a preferred embodiment of my invention, and y Figure-2 a cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 on Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a curling rod with a strand 1 of hair partially wound thereon anda fragment of my invention inposition' to beapplied.
Figure 4 is a view similar to. Figure 3 but showing my invention being folded over the end of the strand of hair and its end turned over the hair already Wound on the curling rod.- I f Figure 5 shows the completed operation with my device firmly holding the strand of hair in positionton the curling rod.
Referring now more in detail to the draw- 0 ing, my device preferably consists of a soft bendable wire 5, such as copper, J bent into a substantially U-shape. form. A portion of wire 5 is covered with a cloth 6, which is preferably a coarse mesh fabric and which is folded over along its edges to form hems 7 and along its, end to form a hem 8; the
other end of cloth 6 preferably has a selvage edge 9. T v f In the permanent waving operation, a
strand of hair is secured to the end of the curling rod 10 by means of a string 11, usuallv by forming a running noose in the bight of the string, pulling the noose tight about tee hair, leading the ends through the slot tions, to retain the hair in place.
drawing, the device has been shown applied to a rod onv which is wound a short strand of 1927. serial no. 175,467.
formed in the bottom of curling rod 10, mali mg a few turns of the string about both ha r and rod and leading the loose ends through the slot in t he; bottomof the rod. This fea- W116 has not, thoro ghly intimated as mains my device is then placed in the position shown'in Figure 3-with the end 12 disposedcentrallv of the device; the. device foldhair then wound the rod, 'as shown, untilbut a short end'l2re- 5 :ed on end 12 and end 8 bent aroun d'thehair on rod 10, as shown in Figure 4. The folded over part of the device, enclosing end .12 of the hair, is then wound tightly onrod l0,
considerable force being used, and. theprotruding ends. of wire 5 are then wrapped around the rod over fabric 6, as shown in Figure '5. If desiredythe wiren'eedno't be cloth being sufficient, under ordinary condie hair, but, where a longer strand of hair is to be treated, the device will be applied at a point higher up on rod 10.
After the waving operation-is completed,
the device is removed from the hair on curl- 'ingv rod 10 and maybe straightened out for In the The device maybe applied to and re provided beyond'edge 9, the wirewithi'n the fraction ofthe time ordinarily required and i this saving-of time is importantdue to the total time required to ordinarily secure all of the hair of a person to the curling rods.
In winding hair on a curling rod in the usual manner, the operator cannot pull the extreme endof the strand tightly aboutthe rod and consequently the extreme ends of the hair are seldom curled. Afterthe winding operation iscompletethe operator must hold the ends of the hair against the rod .with one hand and secure them in place by.
winding string or. strips of cloth over them,
with the other.
It is a well known fact that, if the hair canbe so tightly wound on the curling rod as tobe put u'nder'tension and this tension maintained during the waving process, a
c the curlingrod in the usual manner.
lIlVelltlOIl not only produces ringlets that tighter and more permanent ringlet is produced.
By employing my invention, the end of a strand of'hair may be put under tension whichis nearly impossible when secured to l\Iy are evenly and tightly curled tothe very ends of the hair but also allows the operator to complete the operation in considerably less time. I
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be under- 'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is f 1. Ad-evice of the character described in ,cluding a piece of fabric and a bendable wire secured to a plurality of the edges of the fabric, the ends of the wire being accessible at one edge.
2. A device for use incurling hair comprising an oblong piece of. cloth. hems formed on three sidesof the cloth, and a bendable Wirein the hems, the ends of the wire projecting'at the fourth side of the" cloth. I V V 3. A device of the character described including an oblong piece of cloth, hems formed on three sides of the cloth, and av bendable wire in the heme. and extending beyond the end of the cloth to provide ends for securing the cloth in place, substantially as described. 7
4'. In combination with a curling rod having a strand of hair partly wound thereon,
ahair retaining device including aportion adapted to be bent around the hair onthe rod, aportion adapted tov be folded. overandenclose the end of the] strand of. hair and to be wound on the rod with the hair, said portions comprising: an oblong piece of ma terial having a resilient means along three edges thereof anda hem enclosing the. resilient means. the ends of said means being accessible at the fourth edge of the material.
5. Means for retaining strands of "hair about a curling appliance or the like com prising an oblong piece ofcloth, a bendable strip of material along three edges of the.
cloth, and a hem formed from the cloth enclosing the strip so that it may be drawn thru the hem beyond the fourth side of the cloth.
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification. I
