UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAMP.
Application filed May 27,
This invention relates L0 means for temporarily holding parts of furniture and other structures while being glued or otherwise fastened together: and the objectof my invention is the construction of clamp which can be of almost universal application in holding together either narrow or wide boards, from thin bars to large table tops and the like.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a side view, partially in section, of a clamp embodying one form of the invention. Fig. 2 illustrates the main portion of the clamp as used in another manner. Fig. 3 shows the same employed for pressing apart. Fig. at shows the device as used for binding together an extra wide article. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blocl: used in connection with the main portion of the clamp.
The clamp comprises a threaded rod 1 having a nut 2 thereon provided with a iinger 3, and a loosely mounted collar at having a like finger 3; the collar being kept from longitudinal displacement on the rod by means of shoulders 5. An end of the rod, preferably that adjacent the parts 435, is squared, as at 6 for enabling the rod to be forcibly rotated.
I prefer to have the fingers 3 inclined slightly toward each other and also to be roughened or serrated in order to ensure against their slipping out from any holes in which they are introduced for drawing parts together.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, one of the fingers 3 is inserted in a hole 10 of a block 11, which hole is also inclined relative to the sides of the block in order to present a flat surface to the board 12 which is supposed to be freshly glued to a second board 13; and the other finger 3 is inserted 1927. Serial No. 194,708.
in a hole 1% in a metal L-shaped hook 15 whose short arm 16 is engaged with the exposed edge of the strip 13. By having a considerable number of the holes 14, the adjustment of the nut 2 is greatly reduced. By a turn or two of the rod 1 the parts 12, 18 are ightly pressed together.
For pressing together two boards 20, 21 whose under surface is never to be exposed, two holes 22 nay be bored therein at a slight angle for the introduction of the fingers 3, a nd the same be thereby pressed together, rig. 2.
For binding together an extra wide article, a table top, a rope 25 may have its ends looped over the fingers 3 and thereby tightly drawn toward each other.
I prefer to have the block 11 longer than it is wide and to provide it with three holes 10, one near each end, to enable the clamp to be applied close to a corner.
To enable the clamp to press two strips 26 apart, a notch 27 is, formed in each finger 3 near its extremity for engagement with the corners of the strips, as shown in Fig. 3.
iVh-at I claim as my invention is:
A clamp comprising a screw rod having at one end means for its rotation, a collar rotatable but not slidable on said rod, and a threaded collar turning on the threaded portion of said rod, each collar having a straight but slightly inclined finger projecting therefrom, each finger being roughened on its acute-angled face, and formed with a notch at the end of its opposite face, said collars being entirely independent of each other except as controlled by said rod.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of May, 1927.
CHARLES H. FERNALD.
