This invention relates to criinpers, and moi-e particularly to hand '0 elated crin ip ers for crimping a'deform'ab e tube against an article-"of smaller diaineter. 6 .An object of my criiii'pers wl'ch are sin'iple in construction and which" can erated to crimp a deformable body annula'rly against an article of smaller diameter.
Another object of my inventioiris'to provide'crimpers having a pair of cooperating j aws whic'hare' for folding and directing a deformable body toward an intermediate semi-circular portion during the crimping operation.
These and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates, by reference to the accom-' panying drawings taken in connection with the following description. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a crimper in open position, embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the jaws in closed position upon an article,
and Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the crimper- Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference,
the crimper consists of a pair of elements 10 and '11,- interposed intermediate their ends, and pivotally secured together by a rivet 12. 13 of the elements curve upwardly adjacent the pivotal connection and terminate in finger grips 14 at their ends.
The ends of the elements 10 and 11, opposite from the grips, provide jaws 15 which are formed with crimping faces at their in: ner adjacent edges. The end portions 16 0f the crimping jaws are bent so that they will extend in reverse planes to that of the bandle portions Thus the jaw of the handle held uppermost will lie in a plane beneath the plane of the jaw of the handle held lowermost. The curve of the handles is also slightly different so that they will engage when the jaws are overlapping to limit the the curve of the handles, their engagement will vary and thus the action of the jaws I can be limited in their closing movement to provide the desired minimum crimping area.
The crimping faces of the jaws are similar in outline, and are oppositely disposed. The outer and inner portions 16 and 17 respectively of each crimping face are sub-. stantially straight and extend substantially mention is to provide 4 a p j y I be appliedaronnd a'defoi'mable article, bereadily applied and opformat with guide portions The handle portions 'lustrated in Fig. 2,
closing movement of the aws. By varying a v a I The eate poitio' s18" of the jaw faces, intermediate the traight angularly disposed ends, an;
su ant ally semi-circular in outline. 1
at acute aiigis to each ther.
1 6 and 17 will deforih' the tithe, a s the are moved "tdward "each tithei, and will guide the tube toward the curved portions of the jaws. The straight faces will crimp or fold, the wall of the tube longitudinally, as the area 7 therebetween is decreased. When the tube has been crimped by the straigl'itfaces to a diameter substantially that ofthe area between the curved faces 18, further movement of the jawstoward eaeh other will deform the crimped portion of the tube annularly.
The angle formed by the twoface portions 17 is always tube being crimped will not be pinched between these faces, but will be guided toward the curved faces 18 so that the shape of the final crimpproduced Will be determined by the latter. 7
One of the uses for which this invention is adapted is in connection with crimping tubes against a strand of hair in a permanent waving process. Such tubes are he quently formed of paper and sheet foil associated therewith, and it will be seen that a crimping action on such tubes will crimp the tube against a strand of hair 20,.as ilso that it will be self secured and sealed therewitln Various changes can be made in the structure described herein as an embodiment ofmy invention, without departing from the spirit of theqinvention'and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1.' A crimper comprising a pair of crossed elements, means for pivotallysecuringsaid elements together, handles at one end of said elements, and crimping jaws having jaw faces of similar out-line at the other end of said elements, the inner edges of said jaws being opposed to'provide a crimping'surface and having substantially straight angularly disposed end portions joined by a rounded in- 110 termediate port-ion.
.2. crimper comprising a pair of crossed The ends of the jaws can be openeddo a, v
sufliciently great-that the' eO elements, means for pivotally securing said elements together, handles at one end of said elements, and crimping jaws having jaw faces of similar outline at the other endof sfid' elements, the inner edges of said jaws being opposed to provide a crimping surface and having substantially straight angularly disposed end portions joined by a rounded intermediate portion, the outer ends of said jaws being bent to reverse their relation relative to that at the central portions of said elements.
3. l crimper comprising a pair of crossed elements, means for pivotally securing said elements together, handles at one end of said elements, and crimping jaws having jaw faces of similar outline at the other end of said elements, the inner edges of said jaws being opposed to provide an enclosed crimping surface When in overlapping relation and having angularly disposed end portions joined by arcuate intermediate portion, the outer ends of said jaws being bent to reverse their 4. A tool for crimping tubular articles which comprises a'pair of pliers, the opposing faces of which are each formed with-a crii'np-shaping section and guiding sect-ions diverging therefrom. v
5. A tool for crimping tubular articles which comprises a pair of pliers, the opposed faces of which are each provided with an intermediate crimp-forming section and guiding sections diverging therefrom, the opposed guiding sections forming relatively obtuse angles with one another as the pliers are closed. j
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aliix my signature. V
