This invention relates to hair dressing implements and more particularly to a device similar to a curling iron and by means of which hair may be crimped to form an initial or any other desired character.
One object of the invention is to provide a device for crimpin the hair and forming an initial which may be heated by electricity and further to allow the portions which form the letters or other characters to be detached and others substituted so that any initial or character desired may be used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in its construction and very easy to operate.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an initial formed in a girls hair by means of the improved device,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved implement,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the implement,
Fig. l is a transverse sectional view taken on the line i l of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
This improved implement resembles a curling iron and is provided with a handle 1 formed of wood, hard rubber or any other heat insulating material. The handle is formed with a longitudinally extending bore through which is passed a two-wire electric cord 2 having a terminal plug 3 at its outer end. Ahollow shank 4 projects forwardly from the handle and has its forward portion internally thickened to form a socket 5 which tapers inwardly. The electric cord extends through the handle and into the hollow shank, as shown in Fig. 3, and at its forward end has one of its wires 6 secured to a terminal 7 which is insulated from the walls of the shank, as shown at 8, and the other wire of the cord is grounded similar to the manner in which the second wire of an electric light socket is grounded. A lever 9 extends longitudinally of the handle and shank and is mounted for swinging movement toward and away from. the shank and yieldably held in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In thefcrm illustrated the lever is provided with side extensions or wings 10 which engage opposite sides of the shank and a strip resilient metal which is folded interme- 'ate its ends has one arm 11 bound against he shank by a clip 12 and bent to provide a ,atcn 18 which grips the ferrule at the forward end of the handle and releasably retains the handle upon the shank. Therefore, the handle may be removed from the shank when repairs are necessary. The other arm 14 of the resilient strip constitutes a spring which extends beneath and bears against the lever to yieldably retain the lever in its normal position. It will be readily seen that, when the handle is gripped in a hand and the thumb engaged upon the pad 15 of insulating material which is fixed upon the handle of the lever by a rivet 16 which also serves to secure the rear end of the spring 14. to the lever, the forward end portion of the lever will be swung away from the shank. Therefore, the device may be held and operated similar to the manner in which a curling iron is operated.
In order to crimp the hair and form an initial or other character 17, there has been provided companion dies 18 and 19 which may be letters of the alphabet as illustrated or of the proper shape to form emblems or fancy characters. The die 18 is provided with a shank 20 which is arcuate in cross section so that it fits snugly about the shank 21 of the die 19 and all portions of the die 18 are similarly shaped in order that they may have proper engagement with the corresponding portions of the die 19 but the specific shape of the dies and their shanks in cross section may be varied if found desirable. The forward portion of the lever 9 is formed with a socket 22 to receive the rear end of the shank 20 and a set screw 23 is employed to securely but releasably retain the shank within the socket. Therefore, a die 18 of a selected character or initial may be connected with the lever and firmly held in engagement therewith while in use. The shank 21 of the companion die 19 terminates in a head 24- which tapers rearwardly toward'its free end and adapted to have wedging fit into the socket 5 of the shank where it is releasably secured by a set screw 25. It will, therefore, be seen that both of the dies may be firmly connected with the lever and shank which the wires of the cord 2 passes through the heating coil 25 or" the die 19 and causes this die to be heated to the proper temperature.
Afterthe hair has been combed the die 19 is slid beneath the hair with the die 18 swung away from the die 19 by pressing upon the button 15 and pressure upon the button is then released so thatthe spring against the lever and swing thedie 18 to wards the die 19 .until the hair is firmly gripped between the two dies. The heat and pressure will cause the hair to be crimped and after the hair has been engaged between the two dies a sufiicient length of time the die 18 is again swung away from the die 19 and the die 19 drawn out of the hair. The pressure and heat will have'caused the'ha'ir to remain in the crimped condition and when the device is removed the initial or other character will be displayed, as shown at 17 in Fig. 1,
It should be noted that since the socket- 5 and head 2a are rectangular in cross section and the socket 22 and shank 20 are arcuate the two dies will be held against turning in their sockets and retained in position to properly engage each other. It should also be noted that since the shank 21 is bent, as shown at 28, it is ofiset with respect to the head 24 and'disposed in proper position for flat contact with the shank 20. Therefore, the two dies will properly engage each other.
Having thus described the invention, we claim: p
