FIG. 1 . The beadjewelry making apparatus 10 provides a means for a user to load at least onebead 15 onto a thread medium 17 (FIG. 9 ) having anend 94 held by the user with athread holding instrument 12. As used herein, the term thread medium means any type of thread, such as bead wire, nylon cord, nylon thread, cotton fiber thread or any other thread medium adapted to be used in making bead jewelry. As shown, the beadjewelry making apparatus 10 comprises anupper housing 18 engaged to alower housing 20 for encasing a motor andgear arrangement 38 that is operatively engaged to rotate abead bowl 14 adapted to receivebeads 15 for making bead jewelry. - As illustrated in
FIGS. 4-8 , thebead bowl 14 is preferably adapted to rotate clockwise about anaxis 84 when actuated by the user and comprises asidewall 72 that defines acavity 68 adapted to receive one ormore beads 15. Thebead bowl 14 further comprises a central raisedportion 70 and aperipheral edge 73 that defines anopening 62 in communication with thecavity 68. As further shown, the portion of thecavity 68 between thesidewall 72 and the central raisedplatform 75 defines achannel 74. To rotate thebead bowl 14, the raisedportion 70 includes across-shaped aperture 76 adapted to operatively engage across-shaped portion 82 of aspindle insert 52. Spindleinsert 52 is also operatively engaged with the gear andmotor arrangement 38 that rotates thebead bowl 14 aboutaxis 84 during operation of the automatic beadjewelry making apparatus 10. Referring toFIGS. 1 and 2 , operation of the motor andgear arrangement 38 causes thebead bowl 14 to rotate clockwise aboutaxis 84 and comprises ahousing 54 that encases amotor 40 having anoutput shaft 48 that drives first, second andthird gears output shaft 48 is rotated bymotor 40, thefirst gear 42 is rotated in one direction that rotatessecond gear 44 in an opposite direction such thatthird gear 46 is rotated in a direction opposite to that ofsecond gear 44. Thethird gear 46 is engaged to arotatable shaft 50 that is operatively engageable withspindle insert 52. When thecross-shaped portion 82 of thespindle insert 52 is operatively engaged to thecross-shaped aperture 76, thebead bowl 14 may be rotated bymotor 40 when actuated by the user. - Referring back to
FIGS. 1 and 2 ,upper housing 18 defines a plurality ofbead case receptacles 26 each adapted to receive abead case 25 that may hold a plurality ofbeads 15. As noted above, funnel 27 is used to facilitate pouring ofbeads 15 from thebead bowl 14 intobead case 25 in a quick and effective manner. In addition, upper housing 18 further defines a plurality ofbead bowl receptacles 28 each adapted to store abead bowl 14 in order to interchange abead bowl 14 on the automatic beadjewelry making apparatus 10 with anotherbead bowl 14. In this manner, different types ofbeads 15 may be loaded during the bead stringing process by simply interchangingbead bowls 14 containing a particular type ofbeads 15. - The
upper housing 18 further includes astand 36 operatively engaged to abrush arrangement 30. Thebrush arrangement 30 comprises ahandle 34 connected to stand 36 through ahinge 78. The free end ofhandle 36 comprises abrush 32 that is disposed insidechannel 74 and adapted toagitate beads 15 whenbead bowl 14 is rotated such that thebeads 15 are caused to tumble faster. As shown inFIGS. 5 and 7 , thehinge 78 swivels thehandle 34 to permit thebrush 32 to be disposed inside thechannel 74 of thebead bowl 14. In this position, it is preferable that thebrush 32 be located along the middle portion of thechannel 74 such thatbeads 15 disposed inside thechannel 74 are agitated and followpaths bead bowl 14 is rotated as shall be explained in greater detail below. - Preferably, the
lower housing 20 is engaged to acover 22 that protects the automatic beadjewelry making apparatus 10 and allowsapparatus 10 to be carried as a carrying case using ahandle 80. Thecover 22 is operatively engaged to theupper housing 18 through a pair ofhinges 178 that provide a means of opening andclosing cover 22. Adrawer 90 is provided at thelower housing 20 for storingthread medium 17 and additional tools for manufacturing bead jewelry. In addition, afunnel 27 is provided that is adapted to facilitate the pouring of thebeads 15 from thebead bowl 14 back into one of thebead cases 25 in a quick and effective manner. Referring toFIG. 13 , eachbead 15 preferably comprises abody 95 defining aconduit 96 therethrough in communication withopposed openings 97.Thread medium 17 is adapted to be inserted into either opening 97 and throughconduit 96 when loadingbeads 15 ontothread medium 17 during the bead stringing process. - According to one aspect of the present invention, a
thread holding instrument 12 is provided to retain and hold athread medium 17 during the bead stringing process as shall be discussed below. Referring toFIG. 9 , thethread holding instrument 12 comprises abody 56 including ahandle 66 and anextension 58 having adistal end 64 that defines aretention member 60 and anopening 62. Thethread holding instrument 12 further comprises a spring loaded mechanism (not shown) that opens and closes opening 62 such that a portion ofthread medium 17 may be engaged by the user by insertingthread medium 17 through theopening 62 and allowing the spring loaded mechanism to close and retain thethread medium 17. - In operation, the user engages a
bead bowl 14 tospindle insert 52 and then pours one ormore beads 15 intocavity 68 ofbead bowl 14. Once thebeads 15 are disposed inside thebead bowl 14, the user rotatesbrush arrangement 30 such that thebrush 32 is disposed inside the middle portion of channel 74 (FIG. 7 ). The user then actuates themotor 28 by turning aswitch 100 that actuatesmotor 40 that automatically rotates thebead bowl 14. Rotation of thebead bowl 14 causes thebeads 15 to be agitated by thebrush 32 of thebrush arrangement 30 and forces thebeads 15 alongpaths thread medium 17 to thethread holding instrument 12 and inserts theend 94 of thethread medium 17 into the stream ofbeads 15 being agitated bybrush 32. The inventors have discovered that positioning theend 94 ofthread medium 17 into thepath 98B ofbeads 15 flowing between thebrush 32 andsidewall 72 of thebead bowl 14 causes loading of thebeads 15 onto thethread medium 17 in an optimal manner, although such loading can also occur alongpaths beads 15 have been loaded to thethread medium 17, a crimping device 23 (FIG. 1 ) may be provided having a crimping portion 55 adapted to crimp a small metal bead (not shown) alongthread medium 17. - As noted above, the user may interchange different bead bowls 14. As noted above, the
upper housing 18 forms a plurality ofbead bowl receptacles 28 each adapted to store abead bowl 14, thereby allowing the user to replace abead bowl 14 with anotherbead bowl 14. To replace thebead bowl 14 the user swings out thebrush arrangement 30 away from thebead bowl 14 and disengages thebead bowl 14 from thespindle insert 52. The user then engages anotherbead bowl 14 to thespindle insert 52 to make the automatic beadjewelry making apparatus 10 operational. - It should be understood from the foregoing that, while particular embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described, various modifications can be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
