Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention is directed to a hair extension, a clasping mechanism for a hair extension, and a method of using the same.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Various types of hair extensions are known. These hair extensions are used to give users who wear them the appearance of having different hair styles or hair colors without the commitment of either having to grow real hair and/or having to dye one's real hair. In view of these benefits, hair extensions have gained widespread use.
  • However, conventional hair extensions need to be typically applied and removed to and from a user's hair or scalp by a professional beautician or hair stylist. This application and removal process results in an inconvenience and a high cost to the user.
  • Additionally, the conventional hair extensions are typically glued, sewn, and/or crimped to the user's natural hair and/or scalp. This application process results in discomfort and pain to the user and can cause damage to the user's natural hair and scalp.
  • Accordingly, a hair extension with an improved structure and attachment mechanism is necessary to overcome these problems associated with the conventional hair extensions.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention provides a hair extension having a clasping mechanism that is easily secured to a line of hair.
  • The present invention also provides a method of using the clasping mechanism to apply the hair extension to the line of hair.
  • The present invention also provides a method of using the clasping mechanism to remove the hair extension from the line of hair.
  • Additional aspects and/or advantages of the invention will be set forth in part in the description which follows and, in part, will be known to those of skill in the art from the following description, or may be learned by practice of the invention.
  • The foregoing and/or other aspects and advantages of the present invention are achieved by providing a hair extension attachable to a line of hair, the hair extension including a hair extension body formed of a plurality of strands of hair, and a clasping mechanism attached at an end portion of the hair extension body, the clasping mechanism having a first engaging part and a second engaging part disposed adjacent to one another, each of the first and second engaging parts being securely fixed flat on the hair extension body, the clasping mechanism being closable by folding the end portion of the hair extension body over to couple the first and second engaging parts together.
  • The clasping mechanism may include a holding member connected between the first and second engaging parts to hingedly connect the first and second engaging parts together.
  • The holding member and sides of the first and second engaging parts may form a space in which the line of hair is received. The line of hair may be secured in the space by closing the clasping mechanism.
  • The hair extension body may include wires woven among the hairs on said end portion of the hair extension body, and the first and second engaging parts may each include at least one hole by which the first and second engaging parts are attached to the wires.
  • The wires may include a first group of wires woven in between the hairs of the hair extension body and a second group of wires wound around both the at least one hole in the first and second engaging parts and the first wires to couple the first and second engaging parts to the end portion of the hair extension body.
  • Each of the first and second engaging parts may have a substantially flat circular shape with a plurality of holes arranged around a peripheral portion thereof.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a hair extension 10 with a clasping mechanism 18 according to an embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the clasping mechanism 18 of FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a cross sectional side view of the clasping mechanism 18 of FIG. 2, taken along line A-A. Reference number 10 may refer to a body of the hair extension which includes a plurality of hairs.
  • As best shown in FIG. 1, the clasping mechanism 18 is disposed at a top portion the hair extension 10 to be attached to hair on a user's head. The hair extension 10 includes a plurality of strands of hair 27. The clasping mechanism 18 includes a first engaging part 14 and a second engaging part 16 attached to the end (i.e., the top portion) of the hair extension 10. The first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 are connected by a holding member 12 under which a line of a user's hair is received and clasped by the clasping mechanism 18. The holding member 12 may be a wire or hinge. The first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 may have a button-like configuration. As will be described below, the clasping mechanism 18 may be sewn into the hair extension 10.
  • The first engaging part 14 includes a coupling protrusion 20 extending therefrom in a direction away from the hair extension 10. The second engaging part 16 includes a receiving recess 22 in which the coupling protrusion 20 is received when the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 are coupled together by folding the top portion of the hair extension 10.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates the top portion of the hair extension 10 in more detail. The first engaging part 14 and the second engaging part 16 may have bodies of a relatively flat circular shape. Alternatively, the bodies of the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 may be made to be a different shape (e.g., square, elliptical, etc). The first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 may be made of plastic, metal (e.g., brass), or other suitable materials.
  • As best shown in FIG. 2, the first engaging part 14 includes peripheral holes (slits) 26 formed therein. These peripheral holes 26 are used to secure the first engaging part 14 to the hair extension 10. A description of how the first engaging part 14 is secured to the hair extension 10 is as follows.
  • The hair extension 10 includes the hair strands 27 extending from top to bottom (i.e., vertically) in FIG. 2. For simplicity sake, only a few strands 27 of hair are illustrated below the clasping mechanism 18 in FIG. 2. However, it should be understood that these strands 27 of hair actually extend from top to bottom throughout the entire hair extension 10. Here, a strand of hair can refer to a single hair or a plurality of hairs.
  • Extension wires 25 are arranged among the strands of hair 27 in the hair extension 10. For example, the extension wires 25 may be woven horizontally in between the strands of hair 27. As illustrated in FIG. 2, the extension wires 25 extend in a direction that is different from the direction in which the strands of hair 27 extend (e.g., perpendicularly).
  • Attachment wires 24 couple the first engaging part 14 to the hair extension 10 via the peripheral holes 26 and the extension wires 25. That is, the attachment wires 24 are wound around both the peripheral holes 26 of first engaging part 14 and the extension wires 25 of the hair extension 10 to secure the first engaging part 14 to the hair extension 10.
  • As best shown in FIG. 2, the first engaging part 14 may have four peripheral holes 26 that are diametrically opposed to each other. Alternatively, the first engaging part 14 may have any other number of peripheral holes 26 provided that the attachment wires 24 can effectively secure the first engaging part 14 to the extension wires 25.
  • The second engaging part 16 may have a similar arrangement as the first engaging part 14. In particular, a body 16 of the second engaging part includes peripheral holes 28 arranged around an outer periphery thereof. The second engaging part 16 is secured to the extension wires 25 by winding the attachment wires 24 around both the peripheral holes 28 and the extension wires 25.
  • The holding member 12 is wound around the peripheral holes 26 and 28 of the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16, respectively. A line of hair (not shown) of a user is inserted under the holding member 12 such that the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 of the clasping mechanism 18 are clasped together to maintain the hair line in position. Additionally, the hair line may be wound around the holding member 12 one or more times for added security.
  • As can be seen in FIG. 2, the receiving recess 22 of the second engaging part 16 is positioned to receive the coupling protrusion 20 of the first engaging part 14 when the top portion of the hair extension 10 is folder over (i.e., when the top portions of the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 are brought together). The receiving recess 22 may further include protrusion maintaining wires 30 extending thereacross to engage the coupling protrusion 20 when the coupling protrusion 20 is inserted into the receiving recess 22.
  • As best shown in FIG. 3, the coupling protrusion 20 may have a bulb shaped head portion that increases in width from bottom to top. The protrusion maintaining wires 30 of the receiving recess 22 rest on the a portion of the coupling protrusion 20 where the bulb shaped head portion begins increasing in width such that the coupling protrusion 20 cannot accidentally release from the receiving recess 22 when the hair extension 10 is being worn by a user.
  • Additionally, the receiving recess has a graduated shape that corresponds to the coupling protrusion 20 in that the receiving recess 22 increases in width toward a bottom thereof.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates the attachment wires 24 wound around the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 through the respective peripheral holes 26 and 28.
  • Arrow B in FIG. 3 illustrates the operation of the clasping mechanism 18. The first engaging part 14 and the second engaging part 16 are brought toward each other to couple the coupling protrusion 20 to the receiving recess 22. In this manner, the top portion of the hair extension 10 is folded over and the line of hair of the user (not shown) rests between the hair extension 10, the holding member 12, and sides of the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16. The first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 are hingedly connected to one another via the holding member 12.
  • For added security, adhesive may be applied to the receiving recess 22 to adhere the coupling protrusion 20 therein.
  • The holding member 12 may be a nylon coated, multiple-strand stainless steel wire having a brass crimped bead disposed at ends thereof. Of course, the invention should not be limited to this preferred material as other suitable materials will be known to those of skill in the art.
  • Although the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 are shown and described as having the coupling protrusion 20 and the receiving recess 22, it should be understood that this configuration is not intended to limit the scope of the present invention. The coupling protrusion 20 may be disposed on the second engaging part 16 instead of the first engaging part 14, and the receiving recess 22 may be disposed on the first engaging part 14 instead of the second engaging part 16.
  • FIG. 4 is a bottom plan view of the clasping mechanism of FIG. 1 according to another embodiment of the invention. As can be seen in FIG. 4, a bottom portion of the first engaging part 14 includes a crimped bead 29 in which ends 29 a and 29 b of the holding member 12 are secured. The crimped bead 29 is disposed in a recess in the bottom portion of the first engaging part 14 opposite to the coupling protrusion 20 (not shown in FIG. 4). A bottom portion of the second engaging part 16 has the protrusion maintaining wires 30, which may be connected to an outer periphery thereof. As can be seen from FIG. 4, the protrusion maintaining wires 30 extend across the receiving recess 22 (not shown in FIG. 4) which has an outline 22′ represented by a dashed line.
  • FIG. 5 is a side view of the top portion of the hair extension 10 of FIG. 1 when the clasping mechanism 18 is in a closed state. As can be seen from FIG. 5, the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16 are clasped together by the coupling protrusion 20 and the receiving recess 22, respectively. For simplicity sake, the attachment wires 24, the holding member 12, and the extension wires 25 are not illustrated in FIG. 5. A space 30 is formed between the hair extension 10, the side of the first engaging part 14, and the side of the second engaging part 16. The line of hair (not illustrated) of a user is positioned in the space 30 when the hair extension is being worn.
  • FIGS. 6A to 6D illustrate a method of applying the hair extension 10 with the clasping mechanism 18 according to another embodiment of the present invention.
  • FIG. 6A illustrates a first needle 40 having a hole 42 and a movable looping portion 44. The looping portion 44 is movable to open and close the hole 42 such that a line of hair 48 can be disposed therein, as shown. Here, “line of hair” is used to refer to a plurality of hairs that will support the hair extension 10 shown in FIGS. 1 to 5. The line of hair 48 may simply be a section of hair (e.g., 1 mm in diameter), which is separated from the rest of the user's hair.
  • FIG. 6B illustrates the first needle 40 and a second needle 50. The second needle 50 includes a hole 52. As can be seen in FIG. 6B, the first needle 40 having the line of hair 48 arranged in the hole 42 is moved into the hole 52 of the second needle 50. The first and second needles 40 and 50 are made such that the first needle 40 can pass through the hole 52 in the second needle 50. Once the hole 42 of the first needle 40 is moved through the hole 52 in the second needle 50, the line of hair 48 is maintained in the hole 52 of the second needle as shown in FIG. 6C.
  • FIG. 6D illustrates the second needle 50 being moved into position in the clasping mechanism 18. As can be seen in FIG. 6D, the second needle 50 is transferred between the holding member 12 and the hair extension 10. Accordingly, the line of hair 48 is positioned between the holding member 12 of the clasping mechanism 18 and the hair extension 10 as shown in FIG. 6E.
  • At this point, the clasping mechanism 18 can be closed by engaging the coupling protrusion 20 and the receiving recess 22 in the manner illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 5. Alternatively, the line of hair 48 can be wound around the holding member 12 one or more times for added security, before closing the clasping mechanism 18.
  • It should be noted that although FIGS. 6A to 6E illustrate two needles 40 and 50 used to position the line of hair 48 in the clasping mechanism 18, a single needle may alternatively be used. For example, the first needle 40 shown in FIG. 6A may be transferred directly between the holding member 12 and the hair extension 10 once the line of hair 48 is secured therein.
  • FIG. 7 illustrates the hair extension 10 of FIG. 1 when it is being worn by a user 1. As can be seen in FIG. 7, the hair extension 10 and the clasping mechanism 18 is attached to the line of hair 48.
  • It should be noted that although FIG. 7 illustrates the outline of the clasping mechanism 18, the clasping mechanism 18 is not actually visible during use of the hair extension 10 (i.e., when the user is wearing the hair extension 10). Instead, the clasping mechanism 18 is disposed on an inner portion of the hair extension 10.
  • FIG. 8 illustrates a method of attaching the hair extension 10 and the clasping mechanism 18 of FIG. 1 to a user's hair according to another embodiment of the present invention. The method of FIG. 8 is described below with reference to FIGS. 1 to 7.
  • First, a user collects the line of hair 48 at step S100. Here, the user may moisten the collected line of hair to make the line of hair 48 easier to manage.
  • Next, the user arranges the line of hair 48 in the first needle 40 at step S110.
  • At step S120, the first needle 40 is then transferred through the hole 52 in the second needle 50 such that the line of hair 48 is positioned in the hole 52 in the second needle 50.
  • Once the line of hair 48 is secured in the second needle 50, the second needle 50 is transferred along the hair extension 10 under the holding member 12 at step S130. The line of hair 48 remains in a hinge formed by the holding member 12 and the first and second engaging parts 14 and 16. Also, in step S1130, the clasping mechanism 18 may be adjusted to a desired position on the root section of the line of hair 48. The clasping mechanism 18 may be positioned so as not to be flush with a user's scalp.
  • At step S140, the line of hair 48 is wound around the holding member 12 of the clasping mechanism 18 for added security.
  • At step S150, the clasping mechanism (clamping attachment) 18 is closed by inserting the coupling protrusion 20 of the first engaging part 14 into the receiving recess 22 of the second engaging part 16. Here, the clasping mechanism 18 and the hair extension 10 lay flat on the user's head.
  • At this point, the method of attachment of the hair extension 10 and the clasping mechanism 18 is complete. Now, the hair extension 10 may be positioned and angled as desired on the user's head.
  • As set forth above, it should be noted that other variations of this method may alternatively be used. For example, the first needle 40 may be applied directly to the clasping mechanism 18 without using the second needle 50. In this case, the steps S120 and S130 would be combined and modified to omit use of the second needle 50.
  • The method of FIG. 8 may be repeated for a plurality of hair extensions.
  • FIG. 9 illustrates a method of removing the hair extension 10 and the clasping mechanism 18 of FIG. 1 from a user's hair according to yet another embodiment of the present invention. The method of FIG. 9 is described below with reference to FIGS. 1 to 7.
  • First, in step S200, the clasping mechanism 18 is opened by removing the coupling protrusion 20 of the first engaging part 14 from the receiving recess 22 of the second engaging part 16. Here, side ends of the top portion of the hair extension 10 may be pulled apart from each other to disengage the clasping mechanism 18.
  • In step S210, a detangling agent is applied along the length of the line of hair 48. The detangling agent may be PAUL MITCHELL® detangler. The detangling agent may be applied along the length of the line of hair including a root section thereof.
  • In step S220, a comb is run along the length of the line of hair 48. Here, the comb may be run along the length of the line of hair excluding the root section of the line of hair 48. A fine tooth comb may be used in step S220.
  • In step S230, the clasping mechanism 18 is removed from the line of hair 48 by transferring the hair extension 10 along the line of hair 48 until the hair extension 10 is pulled from an end of the line of hair 48.
  • The method of FIG. 9 may be repeated for a plurality of hair extensions.
  • According to the embodiments of the present invention, the hair extension 10 can be applied and removed to/from a user's natural hair an unlimited number of times. This is due, at least in part, to the fact that the hair extension 10 need not be glued, crimped, or sewn to the user's natural hair or scalp. The hair extension 10 can be worn comfortably by the user 1.
  • Additionally, the hair extension 10 may be applied and removed by the user his or herself, without the aid of a beautician due to the ease with which the clasping mechanism 18 can be used.
  • The hair extension 10 may be made any length, color, or texture according to a user's needs.
  • Finally, the clasping mechanism 18 of the previous embodiments of the present invention secures the hair extension 10 to a user's hair such that the hair extension 10 can be worn during all different types of activity.
  • Although a few embodiments of the present invention have been shown and described, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that changes may be made in these embodiments without departing from the principles and spirit of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims and their equivalents
