HAIR DISPENSING HOLDER FOR vows HEAD Filed Sept. 4, 1962 I u iii [j l mum/0 INVENTOR J55 W DEA/V BY V. D/fi/V/I J. DEA/v HTTORNEYS United States Patent 3,256,999 HAER DESPENSHNG HQLDER FQR DGLLS HEAD .l-csse W. Dean and Voltairine Diana J. Dean, both of 1295 Sheridan Ave, Bronx 56, NIY. Filed Sept. 4, 1962, $22. No. 221,236 '7 *Clainis. ((3. 46-472) This invention rel tes to dolls, toy figures and the like and the invention has particular reference to a doll, toy figure and the like having hair which may be dispensed as desired by the child in playing therewith.
The invention comprehends a doll, toy figure and the like having a cavity in the head thereof adapted to receive a length of one or more Icons of hair with the end portion thereof protruding from an opening in the head to permit of the hair covering the top of the head in the usual manner. In order to hold the locks of hair against too free dispensing through the opening in the head, the present invention comprehends a holder fittedly engaged in the said head opening and through which holder the locks of hair protrude so as to permit of the gradual and progressive withdrawal thereof as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder which is biased into engagement with the wall of the opening in the head of the doll, toy figure or the like and which permits of the withdrawal of the holder so as to substitute a new head of hair of the same or of a di ferent color and which holder also biases the hair against too free dispensing thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a holder in the form of a frame having an elongated opening through which one or more loclzs of hair protrude with the hair of each lock secured together Within the head of the doll and which loclrs may be independently dispensed through the frarne.
Still another object of the invention is the arrange ment of the locks of hair in planar formation within the head with each of the locks secured to a backing and with the locks protruding through the frame in parallel relation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
in the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a view in elevation of a doll provided with a hair dispensing holder in the head thereof constructed in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged view of the dolls head with the hair dispensing holder arranged in juxtaposition thereto and with two locks of hair disposed in protruding relation in the holder.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional View of the holder shown in position in the opening in the dolls head and with the head fragmentarily illustrated.
PEG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
Fl". 5 is a transverse sectional view of the holder showing a modified form of means biasing the locks against too free dispensing thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the invention is illustrated in its application to a doll but which may be any toy figure or the like.
The doll may be of any desired character having a head 1d provided with a cavity ll and with an opening 12 in the top thereof in which is arranged a holder 13 having one or more locks of hair disposed in protruding relation with a substantial length of each of the locks stored as a supply in the cavity ll. As illustrated, the doll is provided with two locks .14 of hair, each of which is arranged in flat formation and is secured together by titching 15 which extend through the lock and a backing it? of sheet material such as fabric or the like is disposed against one side thereof. referably each of the backings is provided with a tab 17 for facilitating the handling of the looks. The locks are disposed in side by side relation and protrude through the holder in parallel relation with the ends thereof being free to be draped as desired over the top of the dolls head.
The holder 13 includes a top wall 19 having an opening 29 in the form of a rectangular slot. Depending from the underside of said top wall are oppositely disposed spring tongues 21 and 22 which are affixed thereto to extend longitudinally in spaced relation from the longitudinal side edges of said top wall so as to provide a lip 23 at each longitudinal edge of the holder. The tongues 21 and 22 have outwardly curved side portions 24 and inwardly and upwardly bowed lower portions 25 with the free end portions 26 disposed in parallel relation and spaced apart corresponding substantially to the width of the slot 29. The holder also includes end walls 28 and 29 which are affixed to the underside thereof and extend transversely in spaced relation from the end edges thereof to provide lips at the ends of said holder. The end walls 28 and 2h extend outwardly in bowed formation from said top wall adjacent the outer ends of the spring tongues 21 and 22.
A rectangular frame 31 of arcuate shaped formation in section borders the opening 12; in the dolls head with the upper and lower edge portions thereof clampingly engaging over the opposite faces of the wall of the head adjacent the opening so as to retain the frame in position therein.
The top wall 19 of the holder overlies the frame 31 with the spring tongues 21 and 22 and the end walls 23 and 29 engaging the frame between the lips and the bowed side and end portions thereof. Constructed in this manner the holder is securely held in position in the frame 31 by the bias of the bowed side and end portions of the spring tongues and end walls against the frame so as to prevent accidental or unintentional frecing of the holder therefrom. However, the holder may be removed by grasping the edges of the lips for inserting a new supply of hair.
It will be understood that a child playing with the doll many elongate the portions of the locks protruding hrough the holder to provide the doll with long hair or the child may cut the locks to provide a doll with short hair. When the locks have been reduced in length the child may insert new locks of hair to again provide the doll with long hair.
The locks of hair project through the slot in side by side parallel relation with each lock extending substantially the full length of the slot as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The loclcs similarly extend between the inner end portions of the spring tongues which are inwardly biased thereagainst to retain the same against too free dispensing thereof but which permits of the gradual withdrawal and dispensing of the locks by slight pull on the ends thereof while the locks may be combed or brushed without unduly lengthening the protruding portions.
The locks of hair may be retained against too free dispensing thereof by oppositely disposed spring tongues 33 and 34 depending from the underside of the top wall 35 of the holder 36 through which the locks protrude similar to the holder 13. The tongues 33 and 34, however, are provided with rollers 37 and 38 carried by pintles 39 at the upper ends of the upwardly directed portions 43 and ll which rollers are biased against the locks. 14 as shown in FIG. 5 of the drawings.
While the preferred form of the invention is shown in communication'with a cavity therein, a holder removabiyattached to said head and disposed in said opening and having a top Wall provided with an open portion, oppositely disposed tongues connected to and depending from said top Wall with inner end portions of said tongues arranged in said cavity and disposed in spaced relation corresponding substantially to one dimension of said open portion, a lock. of hair having inner and outer end portions, said lock being arranged with the inner end portion thereof disposed in said cavity, said lock extending between said inner end portions of said tongues and protruding therefrom through said open portion in the top Wall of the holder with the outer end portion of said lock being adapted to be draped over the head of the figure, and said inner end portions of said tongues being biased against said lock of hair to prevent too free dispensing thereof but permitting of Withdrawal movement of the inner end portion of the lock of hair stored in said cavity to elongate the protruding portion thereof.
