Filed Mar. 6, 1%3, Ser. No. 263,184 4 Ciairns. (Cl. I3247) This invention relates to improvements in hair barrettes, hair ornaments and fasteningdevices therefor.
Heretofore, hair fasteners having decorative articles thereon have been-applied by various means which prove cumbersome in the interchanging various ornaments there- It is an object of this invention to provide a hair barrette wherein an ornamental object such as a flower, bow ribbon, or any other suitable object of decoration may be easily applied and removed with speed from the barrette. Another object of this invention is to provide for an ornamental hair barrette that is inexpensive and easy to manufacture.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a hair 7 barrette, wherein the ornament thereon will not rotate or move out of position while attached thereto.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a barrette that can be made of various sizes and have ornaments of various sizes attached to and removable from the barrette.
It is a particular object of this invention to provide a barrette which can be used for infants hair which will permit small decorative ribbons to be set on the head where heretofore they had to be tied. Babies hair is so fine that the ribbons seldom hold and this invention perunits the use of a very small clip having hair gripping means to which a small ribbon can be secured.
These and other objects of this invention will become apparent from a reading from the following specification and claims.

FIGURE 1 shows a hair clasp fastener rnemberF which may be of plastic, metal or the like comprising a first support or body portion 2, a hair clasping member i pivotally connected-to the body portion 2 at hinge member 6. The body portion -2 has a tab portion 8 along one edge thereof. The tab portion 8 is turned upward with respect to the face of the body portion 2. The face of the body portion 2 has thereon a male head fastening member 19.

The ornamental member may be connected to the hair clasp fastener member F by snap fastening the male fastening member .10 into the resilient socket member 26of fastener member 24. The tab portion 55 of body member 2 engages with one of the notches 29 of the rim portion 28. The engagement of the tab portion 8 with a notch 29 provides a stop member for preventing rotating movement of the ornament 20 with respect to the hair clasp fastener member F. Any one of FIGURE 4 shows another form of a hair clasp fastener member 3t). The fastener rnember 39 includes a body portion 32, a hair clasping member 34 pivotally connected 7 to the body portion 32 at hinge member 36. The face of body portion 32 has a plurality of recesses or notches 38 therein, spaced around a male head fastener member 49. The male head fastener member 49 may be an integral part of body portion 32 or may be a separate member attached to the body portion 32. Body portion 32 1 has retaining notches 38 for the purpose of retaining the hair clasping member 34 in a locked position.
FIGURE 5 shows an -ornamental member 50 including a bow ribbon portion 52 and a female snap fastener member 54. The snap fastener member 54 includes a resilient socket member 56 and a rim portion 58. Socket member 56 has a tab portion 59 extending outwardly from the edge thereof.
FIGURE 6 shows the body portion 32 including the recesses 38 therein and the male head fastener 40.
The ornamental member 5%} may be connected to the.
hair clasp fastener member 30 by snap fastening the male head fastener member 40 into the resilient socket member 56. The tab portion 59 engages with one of the recesses or notches 38. Again as in the disclosure for the lock ing means of FIGURES 1 and 2, the ornamental member 59 may be positioned in any position desired without rotational movement with respect to the body portion 32.
As best shown in FIGURES 2 and 4, the recesses or notches 29 and 38 are four in number. It is desirable that, these notches be positionedin pairs, each set being'on' opposite sides of the fastener member. The primary purpose for this is that the person when positioning the bow or like article need only position it lengthwise or cross wise with respect to the body portion 2. The single tab 8' or 59 will engage either of a pair of recesses Without the person who is fastening the attachment having to rotate thebow or the like to have it seat properly as would occur if there were only two recesses at to each other. .It may be desirable to position the decorative ornament at an angle to the body member 2. If this is necessary, additional recesses may be provided. 7

FIGURE 8 shows an ornamental member 70 connected to an ornamental hair fastener member 72. In this modification the hair clasping member '74 forms a part of the ornamental feature of the ornamental hair fastener member 72' The fastening means for the ornamental member 72 to the hair fastener member '72 can be in the same manner as disclosed for FIGURES 1 and 2 or FIGURES 4 and 5.
FIGURE 9 shows a hair clasp fastener member 80 (shown in broken lines), and a hair clasping member 82 (shown in broken lines). Attached to the hair clasp fastener member 3t) is a bow ribbon 3d. Attached to the bow ribbon 84 is an ornamental member 86.
FIGURE 10 shows a connection means for the modification shown in FIGURE 9. The hair clasp fastener member 89 has a male head fastener member 99 thereon. The male head fastener member 96 may be an integral part of the fastener member 89 or may be a separate member attached thereto as desired.
The bow ribbon 84- includes a female snap fastener member 160. The female snap fastener member 1th includes a resilient socket member m2 and a rim portion 104. The rim portion 194 has notches 195 therein. Also attached to the bow ribbon 84- is a male head fastener member 165. The female snap fastener member 1% and fastener member 1% are attached to the bow ribbon 84 by a retaining ring member 108. The barb members 109 extend through the bow ribbon 84 into notches in the female snap fastener member 190.
Tab portion 81 engages notch 11% to prevent rotational movement of the ribbon 84 with respect to the fastener member 8b.
The ornamental member 86 has a female snap fastener member 110 attached thereto by retainer ring member 112. Ring member 112 has barb members 114 extending through the ornamental member 86 and into notches in the female snap fastener member 110.
The snap fastening member 116 is snap fastened to fastener member 1&6. Stop means for preventing rotational movement of the ornamental member 86 may be provided at 81 and 105'.
The male fastener members may be attached to the ornamental members, and the female fastener members may be attached to the hair fastener member if desired.
More than one snap fastener means may be provided on the hair clasp fastener members, for the purpose of fastening more than one ornament in a side by side relationship on the hair clasp fastener member.
The integral tab portions of this application may be formed with the hair clasp fastener members if molded, or may be cut out from the body of the clasp fastener members and struck up from the body.
FIGURE 11 shows the hair clasp fastener member F having a sponge or resilient material pad 129 underside thereof. The pad 120 co-operates with the hair clasping member 4 for giving a better gripping action on the hair. The pad 12%) may be used with any of the clasp fasteners proposed.
While the invention has been described in connection with different embodiments thereof, it will be understood that it is capable of further modification, and this application is intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of the invention following, in general, the principles of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practicein art to which the invention pertains, and as may be applied to the essential features hereinbefore set forth and as fall within the scope of the invention or the limits of the appended claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A hair barrette comprising:
(a) a support,
(b) a hair clasp attached to said support,
' (c) a first ornament,
(d) a first snap fastener removably connecting said first ornament to said support,
(e) first locating means for preventing rotational movement of said first ornament relative to said support,
(f) a second ornament,
(g) a second snap fastener associated with said first ornament removably connecting said second ornament,
(h) and second locating means for preventing rotational movement of said second ornament relative to said first ornament.
2. A hair barrette comprising:
(a) a first support,
(b) a hair clasp attached to said first support,
(0) a first ornament (d) a first snap fastener removably connecting said first ornament to said support,
(1) said first snap fastener including an upstanding male member on said first support, and
(2) a second support attached to said first ornament including a female member removably con nected to said male member,
(c) and first locating means including a tab attached to one of said supports and adjacent said members and a plurality of cooperating recesses on the other of said supports for preventing rotational movement of said first ornament and said second support relative to said first support,
(f) a second ornament,
(g) a second snap fastener associated with said first ornament removably connecting said second ornament,
(h) and second locating means for preventing rotational movement of said second ornament relative to said first ornament.
3. A hair barrette comprising:
(a) a first substantially rectangular planar support,
(b) a hair clasp pivotally connected to said first sup port at a point adjacent one end, said clasp including a pair of arms extending away from said pivot point,
(e) notch means on said first support at a point remote from said pivot point for releasably retaining said clasp in locked position,
(d) an ornament,
(e) a snap fastener removably connecting said ornament to said first support, said snap fastener including an upstanding male member on said support and a second substantially circular support attached to said ornament and including a female member removably connected to said male member,
(f) and locating means including a unitary, upstanding substantially rigid tab projecting substantially vertically from said first support adjacent an edge thereof and adjacent said members, and a plurality of substantially equally spaced notched recesses around the circumference of said second support, said recesses being of a size and shape conforming to the size and shape of said tab, said tab being selectively inserted in one of said recesses to cooperatively prevent rotational movement of said ornament and said second support relative to said first support.
4. A hair barrette comprising:
(a) a first substantially rectangular planar support,
(b) a hair clasp pivotally connected to said first support at a point adjacent one end, said clasp including a pair of arms extending away from said pivot point,
(c) notch means on said first support at a point remote from said pivot point for releasably'retaining .said clasp in locked position,
(d) an ornament,
(e) a snap fastener removably connecting said ornament to said first support, said snap fastener includ- 5 ing an upstanding male member on said support and a second substantially circular support attached to said ornament and including a female member removably connected to said male member,
(1) and locating means including a unitary, substantially rigid tab depending substantially vertically from said second support adjacent an edge thereof and adjacent said members, a plurality of substantially equally spaced apertures in said first support, said apertures being of a size and shape conforming to the size and shape of said tab, said tab being selectively inserted in one of said apertures to cooperatively prevent rotational rnovement of said ornament and said second support relative to said first support;

1. A HAIR BARETTE COMPRISING: (A) A SUPPORT, (B) A HAIR CLASP ATTACHED TO SAID SUPPORT, (C) A FIRST ORNAMENT, (D) A FIRST SNAP FASTENER REMOVABLY CONNECTING SAID FIRST ORNAMENT TO SAID SUPPORT, (E) FIRST LOCATING MEANS FOR PREVENTING ROTATIONAL MOVEMENT OF SAID FIRST ORNAMENT RELATIVE TO SAID SUPPORT, (F) A SECOND ORNAMENT, (G) A SECOND SNAP FASTENER ASSOCIATED WITH SAID FIRST ORNAMENT REMOVABLY CONNECTING SAID SECOND ORNAMENT, (H) AND SECOND LOCATING MEANS FOR PREVENTING ROTATIONAL MOVEMENT OF SAID SECOND ORNAMENT RELATIVE TO SAID FIRST ORNAMENT.
