2 Qlairns. (ill. 2-471) This invention relates to a head covering to be worn over hair curlers, rollers, or ot =er hair setting devices and is directed more particularly to a protective covering to cushion the head of the wearer when reclining.

It is a common practice for women to set their hair to the style of coifiure desired and to employ for this purpose hair curlers, rollers, or other hair setting devices. in the use of these setting devices, the hair is usually moistened with water or with chemical preparations. Consequently, the hair setting devices must be worn in the hair for a sufficient period of time to allow the arranged hairdo or coiifure to dry and set on or about the curlers. For this reason, the hair is usually set just before retiring for the night and the curling devices allowing to remain in the set coitlure overnight.

However, because of the bulky nature of hair setting devices employed, considerable pain and discomfort has been experienced by the wearer when reclining due to the pressure of the curlers against the head. Moreover, even slight head movements of the wearer when reclining cause relative movement between the wearers head an the hair setting devices arranged between the head and the head supporting pillow with attendant pain and discomfort to the wearer and disarrangement of the hairdo or coiffure.

The present invention has for its primary object to provide a protective head covering to be worn over hair curlers or like hair setting devices to cushion or otherwise protect the head of the wearer when reclining on a pillow or other head supporting surface against the pressure of such curlers and to maintain said curlers in place on the head of the wearer in the position set.

Another object of our invention is to provide a pliable cushioning device to be worn over a hairdo set with curlers and adapted, when in place on the wearers head, to be molded by simple manipulation to form a head support having an inner head supporting surface which conforms substantially to the contour of the hairdo set with the curlers and an outer supporting surface which is substantially smooth, thereby relieving the pressure of the curlers against the wearers head when reclining and maintaining said curlers in proper position.

A further object of our invention resides in the provision of a protective head covering to be worn over hair curlers in which cushioning of the wearers head against the pressure of the hair curlers and maintenance of such curlers in place on the wearers head are accomplished in a novel manner and by new and improved means.

Briefly, the invention consists of a head covering to be worn over a coiffure set with hair curlers and having a highly pliable compartment of suitable length and width to extend across the back and along the sides of the wearers head, said compartment containing a filling material in such form and condition as to be freely shiftable in the compartment to form therewith a pliable supporting cushion adapted, when in place on the wearers head, to be molded by simple manipulation so as to conform to the contour of the coilfure as set with the curlers.

The above and other objects and advantages of our invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a head covering embodying the present invention and in place on the head of a wearer; I

Referring to the drawing, reference numeral llii generally designates a head covering embodying our invention and shown for purposes of illustration as comprising an elongated band of suitable length and width to extend across the back and along the sides of a wearers head, leaving the top portion of the head exposed for purposes of ventilation. The head covering band 1% is suitably formed to provide a pair of opposed layers or thicknesses ll and 12 of cloth, fabric, or other soft and highly pliable material that can be manipulated easily to follow or conform to the irregular contour of a coiiiure and over hair curlers l3.

Adjacent the marginal edge portions thereof, the opposed layers 11 and 12 of the head covering band 10 are sewed or otherwise secured together as indicated by ines of stitching l4, 15, 16 and 17 to form a closed pocket or compartment 18 for a suitable filling material 19 employed for the purpose hereinafter described. The filling material 19 employed in the compartment 1? is preferably in pulversized or granulated form or condition so as to be freely movable or shiftable in the compartment to form therewith a highly pliable head support adapted to be molded in place on the hairdo and over the curlers by simple manipulation. While sawdust, sand, or other well lmown granular or pulverized substances such as rubber, plastic, etc. may be employed as the filling material 19, we have found it advantageous and highly effective to use mica in expanded granular form such as commonly used commercially. This substance provides a filling material having a relatively low density and one which is chemically inert to the lotions or other preparations employed for setting hair.

Although the amount of filling material 19 employed in the compartment 18 may be varied, a sufficient quantity is used to fill the spaces between adjacent hair curlers on the wearers head. In this connection, it may be mentioned that satisfactory results have been obtained when the compartment 18 was filled only partially (preferably onequarter to one-third of its maximum capacity) with eX- panded mica granules in particle sizes ranging between .001" and .025".

The examples of particle size given for the filling material 19 are not to be considered as critical as obviously other particle sizes may be used with equal effect provided however that the same are adapted to enter and fill the spaces between adjacent hair curlers upon manipulation of the head covering when placed on the wearers head.

The upper set of ties 22a are then fastened together to secure the band in place on the coifiure and maintain the filling material 19 in proper relative position in the compartment 13 for cushioning the head of the wearer against the pressure of the hair curlers 13.

It will thus be seen that our inventionprovides a protective head covering of novel construction and one which will effectively cushion the head of the wearer when reclining against the pressure of the hair curlers used to set the coiffure to the desired arrangement or style and which will maintain said curlers in proper position.

It will also be noted that the head covering of our invention provides a highly pliable support adapted to be molded in place on a coiffure and over curlers by simple manipulation, whereby the head of the wearer is cushioned or otherwise protected against the pressure of the curlers when reclining.

From the foregoing, it is believed that the construction and advantages of our invention may be readily understood by those skilled in the art Without further description, it being borne in mind that numerou changes may be made in the details and arrangements disclosed without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

What we claim is:

1. In a protective head covering of the character described, the combination of an elongated band of predetermined length and width to extend across the back and along the sides of a coiffure set with hair curlers and leave the top portion of the head exposed for ventilation, said band having opposed layers of soft pliable material secured together along their marginal edge portions to provide a closed compartment having pliable walls, granular filling material in said compartment in such quantity and particle size as to be shiftable in said compartment and form therewith a pliable cushion adapted to be molded in place on the coifiure by manipu- These manipula-' protect the Wearers head when reclining against the pressure of the hair curlers and prevent relative movement of the air curlers, and means for securing said band in place on the wearers head and maintaining said filling material in proper relative position in said compartment.

2. A protective head covering of the character described comprising an elongated band having opposed layers of soft pliable material of predetermined length and width to extend across the back and along the sides of a coitfure set with hair curlers and leave the top portion of the wearers head exposed for ventilation, stitching along the marginal edge portions of said band securing said opposed layers together to provide a closed pliable com partment and a pair of passageways on opposite sides, respectively, of said compartment and extending longitudinally or" said band, granular filling material in said compartment in such quantity and particle size as to be shiftable in said compartment and form therewith a pliable cushion adapted to be molded in place on the coitfure by manipulation of the outer wall of said compartment to provide cushioning areas of relatively thick cross section cor responding to and registering with the areas of the witfure between hair curlers and areas of relatively thin cross section corresponding to and and registering with the areas of the coiffure set with hair curlers, whereby to protect the wearers head when reclining against the pressure of the hair curlers and prevent relative movement of the hair curlers, and draw strings extending through said passageways and adapted to be tied together at their extremities across the front portion of the wearers head to secure said band in place and maintain said filling material in proper relative position in said compartment.

Claims

1. IN A PROTECTIVE HEAD COVERING OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED, THE COMBINATION OF AN ELONGATED BAND OF PREDETERMINED LENGTH AND WIDTH TO EXTEND ACROSS THE BACK AND ALONG THE SIDES OF A COIFFURE SET WITH HAIR CURLERS AND LEAVE THE TOP PORTION OF THE HEAD EXPOSED FOR VENTILATION, SAID BAND HAVING OPPOSED LAYERS OF SOFT PLIABLE MATERIAL SECURED TOGETHER ALONG THEIR MARGINAL EDGE PORTIONS TO PROVIDE A CLOSED COMPARTMENT HAVING PLIABLE WALLS, GRANULAR FILLING MATERIAL IN SAID COMPARTMENT IN SUCH QUANTITY AND PARTICULE SIZE AS TO BE SHIFTABLE IN SAID COMPARTMENT AND FORM THEREWITH A PLIABLE CUSHION ADAPTED TO BE MOLDED IN PLACE ON THE COIFFURE BY MANIPULATION OF THE OUTER WALL OF SAID COMPARTMENT TO PROVIDE CUSHIONING AREAS OF RELATIVELY THICK CROSS SECTION CORRESPONDING TO AND REGISTERING WITH THE AREAS OF THE COIFFURE BETWEEN HAIR CURLERS AND AREAS OF RELATIVELY THIN CROSS SECTION CORRESPONDING TO AND REGISTERING WITH THE AREAS OF THE COIFFURE SET WITH HAIR CURLERS, WHEREBY TO PROTECT THE WEARER''S HEAD WHEN RECLINING AGAINST THE PRESSURE OF THE HAIR CURLERS AND PREVENT RELATIVE MOVEMENT OF THE AIR CURLERS, AND MEANS FOR SECURING SAID BAND IN PLACE ON THE WEARER''S HEAD AND MAINTAINING SAID FILLING MATERIAL IN PROPER RELATIVE POSITION IN SAID COMPARTMENT.
