(Cl. 132-53) This invention relates generally to head coverings, but has reference more particularly to a head covering of the Wig type.

Head coverings of the conventional wig type are commonly used, but are objectionable in several respects, including the fact that they are frequently heavy and cumbersome to wear, and the fact that in many instances, particularly when the wig is not properly made or fitted, the wearers own hair, which may be of a different color or shade than that of the wig, is visible at or below the marginal edges of the wig.

Another objectionable feature of conventional wigs is that they are relatively expensive, so that if the wearer desires to have a selection or collection of wigs of different shapes, colors or shapes, the overall or total cost of the wigs can be prohibitive.

The present invention has, as its primary object, the provision of a head covering which overcomes the aforesaid disadvantages and objections ofconventional wigs.

Another object of the invention is to provide a head covering consisting, in part, of a turban or turban-like portion, and a wig portion disposed above the turban, and which is removably secured to the turban, so that it may be removed, and replaced by a wig portion of a different color, shade or style.

A further object of the invention is to provide a head covering of the character described, in which the turban or turban-like portion is effective to fully conceal from view the marginal edges of the wearers own hair, and in which the wig portion of the head covering is in the nature of a Wiglet or wig of a fragmentary or abbreviated form, whereby the overall cost of the head covering is greatly reduced, and a plurality of such wigs or wiglets may be used in association with the same or a different type or style of turban, to thereby reduce the total cost, in cases where the owner desires to own a collection of such head coverings of different shapes, colors and shades.

Other objects and advantages of our invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the head covering will be seen to comprise a turban 1, which may be made of silk or other fabric, and which is in the nature of a band or 'bandeau of uniform or varying width which encircles the head of the wearer, the width of this band being such as to effectively conceal the marginal or lower edges of the wearers own hair.

As indicated in FIG. 3, the upper edge of this turban 1 is provided with an inturned hem 2, to which is sewn an annular band of fabric 3, provided at its inner face with a tape 4 from the inner face of which a series of circumferentially-spaced snap fastener elements 5 extend.

The head covering further comprises a Wig or wiglet portion, which consists of a skull cap-like member having an outer layer 6 of fabric, an inner layer or lining 7 of fabric, and plastic and fabric layers, 8 and 9 respectively, interposed between the layers 6 and 7.

The marginal edges of the layers 6 and 7 are bound or covered by means of a tape 10 sewn thereto, as shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5.

The outer layer 7 has sewn thereto, adjacent the tape 10 an annular band 11 of fabric, from the outer face of which a series of snap fastener elements 12 extends, these elements being spaced circumferentially to correspond with the spacing of the snap fastener elements 5.

The wig portion of the head covering further comprises hairs 13, which are cemented or glued to the outer surface of the fabric layer 6 by means of gum spirits or similar adhesive.

A wisp or fragment of hair, such as that designated by reference numeral 14 in FIGS. 4 and 5, may be sealed or sewn into the space between the layers 7 and 9, and projects through an opening 15 in the tape 10 (FIG. 5), thence underneath the turban 1, so that its lower end is exposed at the forehead, as indicated in FIGS. 1 and 2.

With the turban and wig portions of the head covering assembled, as in FIGS. 1 and 2, as by connection of the

5 and 12 to each other, an attractive head covering is provided, in which the hair 13 is draped, in a pleasing manner, over the head and over portions of the turban 1, to give the illusion of the wearers own hair being draped over the turban.

It is thus seen that we have provided a head covering which overcomes various objections to and disadvantages of conventional wigs, and that the head covering consists in part of a turban or turban-like portion, and a wig portion which is removably secured to the turban, so that it may be removed and replaced by a wig portion of a different color or shade, or style, or conversely, that the turban or turban portion may be removed and replaced by a turban portion of a different color or shade or style.

It is further seen that we have provided a head covering in which the turban or turban-like portion is effective to fully conceal from view the marginal or lower edges of the wearers own hair, and in which the wig portion of the head covering is in the nature of a wiglet or abbreviated wig, whereby the overall cost of the head covering is greatly reduced an a plurality of such Wigs or wiglets may be used in association with the same or dilferent types of turbans to thereby reduce the total cost, in cases where the owner desires to own a collection of such head coverings of different shapes or styles, colors and shades.

Moreover, problem of properly fitting the head covering are virtually eliminated through the use of the head covering of this invention, as compared with the problems of fitting conventional wigs, and the actual placement or wearing of the head covering is considerably easier than that of properly placing or wearing conventional wigs.

The head covering is particularly advantageous for wear with casual wear, and especially after the wearers own hair has been trimmed or cut.

It is to be understood that the form of our invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes may be made in the shape, size and arrangements of parts thereof, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

c Having thus described our invention, we claim: 1. In ahead covering of the character described, a fabric turban portion of generally tubular construction adapted to encircle the head of the wearer along the areas in the front, back and sides of the head, thereby concealing 5 a wearers natural hair in said areas, said turban portion having an upper circular edge and a lower circular edge, and a wig portion of generally hemispherical shape removably secured about said upper edge so as to completely overly the top of a wearers head and conceal the natural hair from view.

2. A head covering, as defined in claim 1, in which said turban portion is provided adjacent its upper edge with a series of snap fastener elements, and said wig portion is provided adjacent its lower edge with a series of snap fatener elements removably secured to said firstnamed elements.

3. A head covering, as defined in claim 2, in which said wig portion is of skull-cap form and has an outer fabric layer to which hair is adhesively secured.

4. A head covering, as defined in claim 3, in which said wig portion has an inner fabric lining, and the marginal edges of said outer fabric layer and lining are bound with tape.

5. A head covering, as defined in claim 4, in which a wisp or fragment of hair is enclosed within the space between said layer and lining, and said tape has an opening through which said hair fragment proiects, said fragment extending behind said turban portion for exposure beneath the turban portion.

6. A head covering, as defined in claim 5, wherein said hair extending from said outer layer of fabric is draped over said turban portion of the head covering.

Claims

1. IN A HEAD COVERING OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED, A FABRIC TURBAN PORTION OF GENERALLY TUBULAR CONSTRUCTION ADAPTED TO ENCIRCLE THE HEAD OF THE WEARER ALONG THE AREAS IN THE FRONT, BACK AND SIDES OF THE HEAD, THEREBY CONCEALING A WEARER''S NATURAL HAIR IN SAID AREAS, SAID TURBAN PORTION HAVING AN UPPER CIRCULAR EDGE AND A LOWER CIRCULAR EDGE, AND A WIG PORTION OF GENERALLY HEMISPHERICAL SHAPE REMOVABLY SECURED ABOUT SAID UPPER EDGE SO AS TO COMPLETELY OVERLY THE TOP OF A WEARER''S HEAD AND CONCEAL THE NATURAL HAIR FROM VIEW.
