Cl. 13246 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An elongated body means includes a central lug support portion to which a suitable ornament is detachably connected. A pair of elongated leg portions extend in opposite directions from the central support portion and are sufliciently flexible to be readily manually deformed to a suitable size for insertion through openings provided in a conventional hair roller. Holding means in the form of a plurality of teeth are formed on each of said leg portions adjacent the ends thereof. These teeth are adapted to engage portions of the hair roller for retaining the hair ornament in operative position.

Background of the invention The apparatus of the present invention relates to means for supporting an ornament on a womans hair particularly where rollers are supported by the hair. Such hair rollers are in common use for forming curls in the hair, and many women have such rollers in their hair when in public. The particular feature of the invention is to provide means for presenting an attractive appearance to a womans hair while such rollers are supported therein.

In the prior art, ornamental hair devices have been provided for support in a womans hair. For example, hair ornaments are illustrated in US. Patents Nos. 2,334,937, and 2,660,826. This type of hair ornament is adapted to clip directly onto the hair, and is not adapted for use with hair rollers.

Such prior art devices are not designed for use with hair rollers and present certain problems if efforts are made to employ such structures in conjunction with hair rollers. One problem is the fact that the rollers come in different sizes, these rollers ordinarily comprising a generally open framework made of metal, plastic or similar material of varying thickness. Devices which are adapted to clip directly onto the hair are not readily adaptable for use with hair rollers of varying size.

In addition, if devices such as shown in the two aboveidentified US. patents are employed wherein a hair pin is used for clipping the device in operative position, this type of arrangement will not securely hold the ornament in place with respect to a hair roller, and there may be a tendency for the device to slip out of operative position.

In addition, when using a conventional hair pin for the purpose of holding the device in position, the position of the apparatus with respect to a hair curler would be limited.

Summary of the invention The apparatus of the present invention provides an arrangement which is specifically adapted for use with hair rollers supported in a womens hair. The elongated leg portions of the present device are sufiiciently flexible so as to be readily manually bent into operative position, and they may be bent at various positions therealong so as to adapt the device for use with different size rollers. In other words, the leg portions can be bent so as to fit snugly within different size openings afforded in such hair rollers.

I 3,441,032 Patented Apr. 29, 1969 The leg portions of the present invention also incorporate holding means in the form of tooth means thereon which is adapted to engage portions of an associated hair roller so as to prevent the device from slipping with respect to the hair roller and to hold the parts in the assembled desired relationship.

Additionally, with the arrangement of the present invention, the hair ornament may be supported in many different positions relative to an associated hair roller thereby affording maximum versatility to the device.

An object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel hair ornament for use with a womans hair while rollers are supported therein.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a hair ornament which is adapted to be used with different size hair rollers, wherein slippage of the hair ornament with respect to a hair roller is prevented, and further wherein the hair ornament may be readily mounted in many different operative positions relative to an associated hair roller.

Description of the preferred embodiment Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates the head of a woman wherein the hair is indicated by reference character H. A plurality of rollers are supported in the hair, one of the rollers R being Visible in this figure. A plurality of ornaments 0 are supported in the hair, and as seen in FIG. 1, these ornaments may present a very attractive appearance and may be arranged so as to provide a design by arranging the ornaments so as to extend either from the ends of the associated rollers or from the side portions thereof as will be hereinafter more fully explained,

Referring now particularly to FIGS. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the ornament 0 may be formed of any suitable material such as plastic or the like and may be arranged so as to simulate a flower or any similar decorative item.

A body means indicated generally by reference numeral 10 is formed of a suitable material such as plastic and includes a central support portion 12 which may be generally circular in plan, being formed generally medially of the over-all hair ornament and further being enlarged as compared with the remainder of the body means. A socket 14 of generally spherical configuration is provided in support portion 12 and is adapted to receive a correspondingly shaped projection 16 formed integral with the ornament O. The ornament and the body means are formed of a material suitably resilient to permit projection 16 to be popped into socket 14 whereby the ornament is firmly supported on the body means. In an alternative arrangement, socket 14 may comprise a threaded hole for receiving a correspondingly threaded stud formed on the ornament. Accordingly, the ornament as illustrated is readily detachable from the body means, although the ornament may be permanently affixed thereto if desired.

A pair of elongated leg portions 20 and 22 extend in opposite directions from central support portion 12 and are formed integral therewith. The elongated leg portions are formed of a material such as plastic and are of such a dimension as to be flexible so as to be readily manually bent into operative position as indicated in phantom lines in FIGS. 2 and 3 so as to be inserted within a suitable opening or openings in a hair roller.

The body means may further be formed so that the material thereof is sufficiently resilient so that the elongated leg portions will normally tend to return to the free position shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 wherein they are aligned with one another as shown in solid lines. With such an arrangement, the leg portions may be bent into the phantom line positions and iserted in a hair roller whereupon they will tend to return to their initial free position and thereby exert a force outwardly on associated portions of the hair roller so as to retain the hair ornament in operative position.

Holding means is formed on each of the elongated leg portions and comprises a first plurality of spaced teeth 24 formed on leg portion 20, and a second similar plurality of spaced teeth 26 are provided on leg portion 22. These spaced teeth define an irregular surface disposed on the outwardly facing surfaces of each of the leg portions when they are disposed in their operative position as shown in phantom lines in FIGS. 2 and 3.

Referring now to FIG. 4, the hair roller R is of conventional construction and comprises a generally cylindrical open framework defined by a plurality of annular longitudinally spaced members 30 which are interconnected by a plurality of longitudinally extending stringer members 32. These annular members 30 and stringer members 32 define a plurality of holes or spaces 34 therebetween throughout the length of the roller. The roller is open at opposite ends thereof in the usual manner.

As seen in FIG. 4, the hair ornament of the present invention has been inserted within one open end of the associated roller. It will be noted that the leg portions 20 and 22 thereof have been bent so as to define a generally U- shaped arrangement which is adapted to fit within the open end of the hair roller. When in the operative position shown, the teeth 24 and 26 provided on leg portions 20 and 22 are adapted to spring outwardly and engage portions of the hair roller for retaining the hair ornament in operative position. It will be readily understood that the leg portions may be bent at various points therealong so as to fit within hair rollers of different dimension.

Referring now to FIG. 5, the ornament is illustrated as mounted within the hair roller in a different operative position. As seen in this figure, the ornament has been inserted through holes in the side of the hair roller rather than through the open ends of the hair roller. In the operative position shown in FIG. 5, the teeth on the two leg portions engage associated portions of the hair roller body means so as to hold the hair ornament in the position illustrated.

It will be readily apparent that the leg portions of the ornament may be bent and inserted within suitable holes in the hair roller in any desired relative relationship with respect thereto so as to alford maximum versatility.

It is apparent from the foregoing that there is provided according to the present invention a new and novel hair ornament for use with a womans hair while rollers are supported within the hair. The flexibility of the elongated leg portions permits them to be readily manually deformed at various points therealong so as to be used with different size rollers, and furthermore the ornaments may be mounted in any desired relationship relative to the associated hair roller. When in operative position, the interengagement of the teeth formed on the leg portions of the ornament with portions of the associated hair roller body means prevent relative slippage and retain the hair ornament in the desired relationship. A further advantage of the present invention is the fact that the ornament may be employed when hair clips or pins are being used to support hair on a roller. The ornament may thereby substantially completely hide such hair clips and pins at the visible end of the roller. The ornament when mounted in operative position occupies a relatively small area on a standard size roller thereby allowing substantial space for hair clips and the like. The ornament also serves the additional utilitarian purpose of helping to support hair on the roller in the position as shown in FIG. 5 since when the ornament is employed at an intermediate point on a roller, it is placed through the hair on the roller thereby pressing the hair against the roller for support thereon. Furthermore, when the ornament is placed on the open end of a roller as indicated in FIG. 4, the teeth formed on the leg portions of the ornament may protrude slightly through the roller so as to grasp the hair, depending on the type of roller used.

As this invention may be embodied in several forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof, the present embodiment is therefore illustrative and not restrictive, and since the scope of the invention is defined by the appended claims, all changes that fall within the metes and bounds of the claims or that form their functional as well as conjointly cooperative equivalents are therefore intended to be embraced by those claim.

I claim:

1. A hair ornament comprising a body means including a central support lug having the inner end thereof terminating in a planar surface and the outer end thereof presenting a socket for detachably receiving the end of an ornament, a pair of bendable legs integrally connected to the inner end of said lug and extending outwardly from opposite sides thereof, one side of each of said legs being in the plane of said surface and the side opposite said one side of each of said legs having teeth formed therein, and an ornament having on the rear side thereof a projection detachably received in the said socket of the lug, whereby said legs may be bent and inserted into a tubular hair curler with the projections therein cooperating with the curler to hold said ornament in position.
