SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,121,6ated November 9, 1886, Application filed July 31, 1886. Serial No. 209,631. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER FERREL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terrell, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had 7 to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this improvement is to provide an awning composed of interchangeable partsadapted to be permanently or detachably secured to a building, in order that the same may be conveniently removed without injury by a temporary tenant of the building to which the awning may-be affixed, and applied to another building by the moving tenant, or disposed of to others in condition to be so applied, as may be deemed advisable. These results are attainable by the construction illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.

Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of a building provided with an awning embodying the features of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar representation, illustrating a modification of my improvement. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail representationof one of the awning supports and a stringer connected thereto by a detachable hook-bolt. Fig. 4 is a vertical detail representation of a stringer and awning-support secured together by a detachable hook-bolt. Fig. 5 is a representation of one of the parts detached.

A A are supports'or braces having their inner parts inserted in suitable openings in the building wall A, and rounded and screwthreaded at their inner ends in a manner adapted to receive a washer and nut, a a, and be thereby secured to the joist A". The supports or braces A are inclined and curved downward at their outer ends, .as shown, for the purposes of drainage and effectually shad ing the area in front of the building. The supports A are preferably made of wrought-iron two inches wide by three-eighths of an inch thick.

G is an inclined brace made of the same material, provided with an angular bend at O, and a perforation for the reception of a bolt or screw, for securing the same to the wall, substantially as shown. The brace O is provided with a perforation at its outer end for the reception of a bolt, 0, which is inserted therein and through a corresponding perforation in the brace A, and thereby secures the connection of the parts to each other. The brace O is provided with a flange at 0 which forms a rest for the support A, and prevents any strain' that might accrue from the weight of the same,-

or objects on the top of the structure from coming on the bolt 0.

B is a brace-plate 'made of the same material as theparts A-and O, towhich it is bolted at b b. It is also provided with flanges, at I), over part 0 and under part A, for preventing any strains from weight or other causes from affecting the bolt-connections b b.

Each end of the awning is provided with braces O and B. Intermediate of its ends the structure may be provided with a suitable number of supports, A, one or more of which maybe braced in the same manner as the end pieces, if deemed advisable. Ordinarily the bracing of the end supports, as shown, will be sufficient. v

D D represent stringers, made of wood, secured to the supports A bymeans of hookbolts E, which are connected with the braces through the stringers, which are provided at their top edges with recesses for the nuts E of the bolts, as fully shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

F F represent sheets of corrugated iron, plank, or other suitable material, fixed by screws, nails, or otherwise to the stringers for forming the necessary covering.

G represents an end piece, made of wood, adapted to be secured to the stringers, for giving a complete finish to the structure, and being provided with letters for a sign, if desired, when the awning is attached to a businesshouse.

By forming the supports A in a manner to project from the building a suitable distance ICO horizontally, as shown in Fig. 2, the structure of the awning may be provided with longitudinal and transverse railing, as indicated at H H, and thus made to form a combined awning and balcony, in which case an additional angular brace, 13, between the supports A and braces G, which are made in the same way, are secured in position in the same manner as the braces B. When the structure is intended to support a balcony-railing, it may be provided with a suitable number of braces, A, intermediate of its ends, and they may be bracet in the manner shown.

J J represent tinflashing fixed to the awning-roof and to the building, to prevent leakage. 'When provided with a balcony, the posts for securing the railing of the same may be tenoned or otherwise affixed to the stringers of the structure.

By reason of the mode of constructing and connecting the parts of the structure to the building and to each other they may be readily detached without injury, and applied to another building, as may be deemed advisable.

Having explained the features of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In an awning, the combination of the sup ports fixed to the building-wall in the manner shown, the main angular braces bolted to the building-wall at one end and to the awning-supports at the outer ends, and provided with flanged rests for the awning-supports, the braces bolted to'the main angular braces and to the awningsupports, and provided with flanges adjacent to their ends for engagingthe upper edge of the main braces and the lower edge of the awning-supports, the stringers transversely connected to the awning-supports, and the detachable hook-bolts for secur-' ing the stringers to the awning-supports, substantially as specified.
