UNITED STATES- PATENT DFFICE.
CARL J UNG, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
EAR- PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,785, dated June 5, 1894.
Application fil d October 10, 1893. Serial No. 487,727. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL J UNG, doctor of medicine, of 16 Gerhardstrasse, Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ear-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawings.
The present invention has for its object an improved device for protecting the ears against cold, which differs from arrangements of a similar kind which have been heretofore used inasmuch as it is extremely simple and convenient to be used so that it can be easily fixed :upon the ears, and the whole of the outer parts of the latter are covered by it and kept warm Without interfering with the hearing and without inj uriously aflecting the appearance. This last point is especially important for ladies, elderly gentlemen, and others particular about their appearance, a point which in the ear covers heretofore used has been entirely or imperfectly considered,
and consequently none of these arrangements have become popular or fashionable. The present invention on the other hand is both by its thoroughly suitable method of construction perfectly adapted for the purpose of an ear protector and it also has a neat and agreeable external appearance and can be worn in winter both by old and young of all classes with satisfaction.
The principle of the invention is illustrated and explained in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a side view of the front part and Fig. 2 of the back part of the apparatus. Fig. 3 shows the protector applied to the ear.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the ear protector consists of two essential parts, a front part a Fig. l and a back part b Fig. 2, which are connected together at their back edges by a light spring plate d and may be made for the sake of lightness of aluminium. Both parts are so shaped to the flap of the ear that together, the one a the front part, and the other b the back part, follow closely the shape of the ear and cover the external parts of the latter without causing any inconvenience to the wearer either by pressure or pinching. On the front part a suitably shaped piece 9 fitting against the muscle of the ear (see Fig. 3) is pressed at e by means of a flat spring f which at the same time increases the security of the apparatus while the back part b has a curved piece h which lies between the ear and the head. The several parts a, b, g, and h, may be covered with fur, silk, or other mateterial which will promote and preserve the warmth of the ear.
The adjustment of the ear protector is effected in the following very simple way: The protecting piece g is taken with one hand and that h with the other hand and the two parts a and b are held together. In this position the ear protector is pushed over the ear so that the part h lies in the space between the head and the ear (Fig. 3), while the other piece g when released fits upon the peculiar shaped front muscle of the ear and covers it. By means of the springs d and f the parts a, b, and g, are pressed gently against the ear, and so that any accidental loosening or falling off of the protector is prevented. I
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
An. ear protector consisting of the two flaps a I) connected together by a spring 61 and adapted to fit upon each side of the ear, and a pad 9 connected to the part a by a spring, said pad adapted to bear on the front cartilage of the ear and thus hold the protector in place, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
