UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
EDNA N. DAVIS, OF CHICAGO; ILLlNOlS.
HAIR-RETAIN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,657, dated November 4, 1902. Application filed February 19,1902. Serial No. 94,768- unmade.)
To all, whom it may conccrnw Be it known that I, EDNA N. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Combs; andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in combs, more especially for tucking It consists in a comb comprising, preferably, split ring-like or concentric members united by radial arms or braces, the inner member or ring having also radial pins arranged at suitable intervals apart for the securing or fastening of the hair-tn ft after the application of the comb bodily to the hair, said members being adjustable, according as circumstances may require, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view thereof. vertical section therethrough on theline as m of Fig. l. l
In carrying out my invention I construct the comb, as above intimated, of split, ring-like, or concentric members or sections 1 1, preferably connected together by radial arms or braces 2 2, the inner or lesser member or section 1 having extending therefrom also radial pins 3, the whole preferably being in a single piece of sufficiently flexible or springy material to allow the members or sections to be readily sprung apart in applying the comb to the hair and to aid its automatic clamping thereof after such application. The concentric or ring-like sections or members 1 1 are provided with perforations or slots 4 4, a number being arranged in each member or section near one end and with projections or studs 5 5 one arranged near the oppositeend of each member. It is obvious that by this arrangement, which primarily permits the fastening together of said members of the comb, the adjustment of the same can readily be effected,
according as circumstances may require in applying the comb to the hair or head. Said pins 3, terminating at their free ends ashorter distance from the outer member 1 for the ready insertion of the free portion or tuft of the hair thereon, are upwardly or outwardly bent, as at 3 to permit the passing or carrying of said hair-tuft past the intermediate comb arms or braces from pin to pin in effecting the coiling and securing of said hair-tuft to the comb. This comb thus provides for the expeditious and efiective tucking up and securing of the hairin place, as will be readily appreciated, while it is readily applicable or adjustable to the head, according to the quantity or amount of hair to be accommodated.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A comb comprising an outer, and an inner, member, said inner member having pins with their free ends or points stopping near said outer member and adapted to permit the insertion thereon of the hair-tuft, and means connecting said inner and outer members together, substantially as described.
2. A comb comprising an outer, and an inner, member, said members being connected by radial arms, and saidinner member having'pins with their free ends or points stopping near said outer member, substantially as described.
3. A comb comprising an outer, and an inner, split circular member, said members having means for their fastening and adjustment, and said inner member having pins with their free ends or points stopping near said outer member, and means connecting said inner and outer members together, substantially as described.
4. A comb comprising an outer, and an inner, member, said inner. member havingtupwardly or outwardly bent pins with their free ends or points stopping near said outer member, and means connecting said inner. and outer members together substantially asde; scribed.
5. A comb comprising an outer, and an inner, split circular member connected together by radial arms, said inner member having up- Wardly and outwardly bent pins, with their In testimony whereof I affix my signature free ends er points stopping near said outer in presence of two witnesses. member, each of said split circular members having at or near corresponding ends slots or EDNA DAVIS 5 openings and at or near meeting ends studs Witnesses:
or projections engaging said slots or openings, IRENE H. J OHNSTONE,
G. H. BASSETT.
substantially as described.
