PUFF-COMB Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 28, 1908.
Application filed December. 14, 1907. Serial No. 406,407.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I/VILLIAM S. BEoHroLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puff-Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toilet articles, and particularly to so-called puff-combs and it has for its object to provide an article of this character which may be securely locked in the hair of the wearer so as to be prevented from an accidental forward, backward and lateral displacement.
I attain this object in the article shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of such article, the same being placed on its side. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slight modification. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of another form of the article. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55, Fig. 4.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a hair-roll of any of the preferred and well known forms, such as the braided or woven wire roll illustrated. This roll may be of such shape as to be adapted for the top of the head as the roll shown in Figs. 1 to 3; or it may be of the shape shown in Figs. 4 and 5 iwhich is adapted for the back and sides of the mad.
I do not wish to restrict myself to the shape of this roll, however, as it may be varied to suit various cases. As shown in the drawings, it is essentially circular in crosssection and tapers toward the ends. The same may also be rovided with a suitable cover (not shown), if desired, in order to hide the wire or to protect the hair. I do not, however, wish to lay claim to any construction of the roll or covering, as such are old and well known.
My invention consists in combining with a hair-roll of this character, hair engaging means such as the comb 11 illustrated, and which will lock the said hair-roll securely in the hair of the wearer; and in such a manner as to effectively prevent any accidental forward, backward or lateral displacement of same. This comb may be of any suitable material such as horn, bone, shell, celluloid and aluminum.
I am aware that numerous means have been proposed to securely hold hair-rolls in the hair of the wearer, but none so far proposed provides against an accidental forward (or backward) displacement of said hairroll. I accomplish this end by securing in any suitable manner, to the underside of the said hair roll 10, (Figs. 1 to 3) or to the inner side (Figs. 4 and 5), the comb 11 provided with oppositely disposed sets of teeth 12 and 13. The set 12 of this comb is considerably shorter than the set 13, and the teeth of the former set are also preferably fewer in number and progressively shorter from the middle of the set toward the end. The teeth 12, being usually at a part of the head Where there is likely to be some curvature, are curved as shown to conform with said curvature.
In Fig. 1, the teeth 12 comprise one set only, and are shown located at the middle; while in Fig. 2, there are two sets, one at each end. In the form illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, a comb is placed near each end of roll 10, as shown, and the combs are adapted to secure the said roll to the hair at the side of the head. To insert the roll, the longer teeth 13 are first forced into thehair backwardly or downwardly as the case may be; and the shorter teeth 12 then sprung into place. By means of the oppositely disposed sets of teeth, the roll 10 is firmly held in the hair; both sets preventing accidental lateral displacement, the teeth 12 accidental forward displacement and the teeth 13 accidental backward displacement of said roll.
I claim 1. In an article of the character described: a hair-roll; and a comb secured thereto having oppositely disposed sets of teeth, one set of which is shorter than the other, said teeth being adapted to lock said hair-roll in the hair in such manner as to revent accidental forward, backward and ateral displacement of same.
2. In an article of the character described: a hair-roll; and a comb secured thereto having oppositely disposed sets of teeth, one set of which is shorter than the other and curved to conform to the curvature of the head, said teeth being adapted to lock said hair-roll in the hair in such a manner as to prevent accidental forward, backward and lateral displacement of same.
3. In an article of the character described: a hair-roll; and a comb secured thereto having two oppositely disposed sets of teeth, the teeth of one of which sets are shorter than those of the other, and of lesser num her, said sets of teeth being adapted to lock 5 said hair-roll in the hair in such a manner as to prevent accidental forward, backward and lateral displacement of same.
4. In an article of the character described: a hair-roll; and a comb secured thereto hav- 0 ing two oppositely dis osed sets of teeth, one of which comprises a esser number of teeth than the other and which teeth are shorter than the teeth of said other set, and are also progressively shorter from the middle toward each end.
Signed at Newark in the county of Essex and State 01" New Jersey this 10th day of December A. D. 1907.
