HAIR-FILLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1909.
Patented Aug. 2, 1910.
Serial No. 489,323.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE MATTHAUS, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iair-FilL ers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ladies hair fillers, so-called rats, and has for its object to provide a hair filler which may be used either below the natural hair of the wearer or on top of it, and which when applied will be securedly held in position.
Another object of my invention is to make the construction simple and the filler as light as possible.
To make my invention more clear the same is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, in which- Figure 1 illustrates one mode of application of the filler; Fig. 2 is a skeleton plan View; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a cross section thereof.
In the drawing 1 denotes a spring strip or band of annular shape which is open at one end, as at 2, and which may be made of metal, celluloid, or any other resilient and light material. The filler proper 3 which may be made of natural hair is applied to the strip by having each individual hair tied around the spring strip, as seen from Figs. 2, 3 and 4., continuously all around the strip, so as to constitute an uninterrupted single mass of hair (Fig. 4). Suitably attached to the strip and projecting downward are three or more combs 4, preferably one at each end of the strip and one opposite to the open end thereof. The combs may be of celluloid or any other suitable material and are rigidly connected with the strip to be unable of yielding in lateral direction. 4
In Fig. 1 the application of the filler is such that it will be concealed under the nat ural hair 5 of the wearer. In this case, after the natural hair of the wearer is loosened and thrown or combed over the face, the filler is placed on the head, so that its combs engage in the natural hair and hold the same securedly upon the head. Thereupon the natural hair of the wearer is thrown or combed back and over the filler and may then be fixed in any desired fashion. The filler may also, with persons having little or thin hair, be directly placed 011 the hair of the wearer and serve as a substitute for the natural hair.
7 The main advantage of my invention is the attachment of the hair directly to the spring strip or band, whereby a perfect shape and a nice appearance is attained.
Another advantage of my filler is that the same is washable and does not lose its shape. While with the hitherto existing fillers the washing thereof causes the falling out of the hair, this is not the case with the present filler. The filler is very light and allows the wearer of fixing the hair in any fashion without requiring the assistance of another. The filler also allows of its being placed on the head, so as to fill the hair all around.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A hair filler of the character described, comprising a split ring, a mass of human hair of which each individual hair is tied around said ring, a comb on each end of said split ring and a comb diametrically opposite said end combs, the said combs being attached to the ring to project in a perpendicular plane relative to that of the ring.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VALENTINE MATTI-IAUS.
Witnesses:
CHARLES J. GEI'ER, JOHN T. LAWS.
